Speaking to Chuck Todd on Meet the Press over the weekend, Sony Pictures Entertainment lawyer David Boies said that the movie was only delayed, not canceled.
"Sony has been fighting to get this picture distributed," he said in the interview. "It will be distributed. How it's going to be distributed, I don't think anybody knows quite yet. But it's going to be distributed. And what Sony has been trying to do is to get the picture out to the public. But, at the same time, be sure that the rights of its employees and the rights of the movie-going public are protected."
Fighting who?
Movie Theaters, digital distributors, etc. Sony doesn't own any theaters (I think it's actually illegal..), so they can't force theaters to show it. Apart from PSN, do they really have any digital distribution services?
In my defense.. I did not know that was a thing >.>;
I knew Crackle was a thing but only vaguely and didn't know it was a Sony thing specifically til an article mentioned it as a possibility.
Sony's using the theater chains as political cover. The "big" chains (AMC, Regal, etc) don't really have a monopoly, they only make up about a quarter of the broader movie theater market. Indie theaters are literally begging them to release the movie to them, but Sony says "it has no choice".
Because failing to be pussies is apparently not a choice.
This is 100% true. I called our bookie at Sony to try to get a copy for my parents' and my little two screen movie theatre. They pretty much told me the same thing. They aren't releasing it to anybody because they can't afford to as long as the chain theatres are refusing to show it. Naturally though in their defense chain theatres although make up a smaller portion of theatre owners, they do bring in the most business for the company.
Supposedly Sony has authorized some screenings on Xmas

Idk how to embed tweets.Sony Authorizes Screenings Of 'The Interview'
It looks like moviegoers may be able to see "The Interview" after all. According to Tim League, the founder of the Alamo Drafthouse, Sony has authorized some theaters to show "The Interview" on Christmas Day.
TheWrap reports that Sony will announce plans to release the film in theaters and on video on demand. The Alamo's Dallas location is now offering showtimes and tickets on its website, and Atlanta's Plaza theater also tweeted that it would have showtimes for "The Interview" available soon.
The drama surrounding "The Interview," the Seth Rogen and James Franco-fronted comedy about the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, began earlier this month when hackers launched a major cyber attack on Sony Pictures. At first, the group made terrorist threats against theaters that intended to show "The Interview." Then, major chains, Regal, AMC, Cineplex and Cinemark, decided to drop the movie from theaters. On Dec. 17, Sony pulled "The Interview" completely.
After the studio canceled the Christmas Day release, a representative said that there were "no further release plans for the film." But, on Friday, that final decision seemed unlikely. President Obama called Sony's decision "a mistake," and pressure mounted from the Hollywood community. David Boies, a lawyer for Sony, told "Meet The Press" that the movie "will be distributed."
A representative for Sony was not immediately available to comment.
Yeah my cousin just told me they are gonna release this now on xmas day.. damn that was good marketing
Yea. Never mind that they played off of the herp derps of redneck commie-haters everywhere. It's totally cool that they used this as a marketing ploy.
If this really was a marketing ploy and there were no legitimate threats then that kind of shit should be illegal, if it isn't already. Something about inciting mass panic, I think. Whole thing has been a huge clusterfuck from start to finish either way.
Not saying it was a ploy just than they got a shit ton of marking bc of
Yeah, I'm not going near a theater on Xmas. Theaters full of Jews seems like a big target to me.
going as well, dunno if my local will play it or not but i'll find one
How is this a marketing ploy? Its LIMITED release, they're still not going to make lots of money.
