Real talk though can someone explain to my why being trans isn't a mental illness? As far as i am concerned anything that impedes our life due to faulty brain functioning is a mental illness be it ADHD,social anxiety, or schizophrenia. Seems like being trans is a fairly substantial mis-wiring in someones brain and goes on to generally wreak havoc on their lives requiring them to essentially mutilate their genitals and take exogenous hormones to feel comfortable. I ain't tryin to piss off any trans or w/e i don't really care as they are what? like .3% of the population? I am just curious why it's so taboo to label them as mentally ill it personally wouldn't lessen my desire to see them get help in any way they can. The only time i have ever felt uncomfortable around a trans person was when i was high as fuck pickin up jack in the box at the drive through and the person had lipstick/long hair/painted nails and a fucking massive beard and effeminate voice with a god damn gender neutral name like casey and i didn't know if i should say "thanks man" or not.

You could make the argument transsexuals have a mental illness. That is certainly an argument some of them make in order to argue that they need medical attention (hormones, surgery). The DSM does say transsexuals suffer from gender dysphoria (feeling ill because their sex does not match the sex they see themselves as). There is a distinction between saying that transsexualism is a disorder and saying gender dysphoria is a disorder. In the latter case, the transsexual ceases to have a disorder once she/he transitions successfully into the desired sex. In the former, the transsexual is always considered disordered even if she/he transitions and is satisfied.
