I think the thing a lot of cis people are not realizing here is that this isn't a rare event. This is seriously ridiculously common. Trans kids come out to their parents, and get kicked out of the house, abused, and driven to suicide every day. More than half of trans women attempt suicide at least once. In particular black trans women are disproportionally affected, by a fairly large margin. You don't hear about it often, unless you're part of the community because... no one cares.
