Speaking of the Seahawks and their awful fans, I don't think I shared this story when I went to the Hawks/Cards game a few weeks ago.

So I was at the Yardhouse by the stadium before the game grabbing some dinner, eventually went to go use the bathroom. On my way over, a pair of women in Seahawks jerseys (both fat if it matters) are walking next to me. The one looks at her friend and says to her "Psssh, it's too red in here." There were too many Cardinals fans in Phoenix apparently.

im not making any judgment on the legality of the play, as I actually thought it was pretty brilliant. when harbaugh got flagged for unsportsmanlike, he was stating the pats were only using 4 offensive linemen around the ball, with someone else on the line (in the play on video its shane Vereen), declaring themselves ineligible before the snap. so the TE lines up at the tackle spot in essence, then runs a route from the tackle spot. Vereen, meanwhile, lined up in the slot drifts back behind the line waving his hands, even though he is ineligible - in essence, he is an offensive lineman lined up out wide. again, I don't know the rules about the line formation and how it pertains to declaring eligible well enough, just saying that's pretty interesting. so yeah on that drive for the most part, the pats only used 4 offensive linemen to block and harbaugh mad

edit: if you think about it, when a lineman lines up as an eligible receiver, its usually pretty much announced in the huddle so the defense knows what players are eligible. what harbaugh's argument is is that after the pats would get to the line, Vereen would be like HAY IM INELIGIBLE then shitass tom bardy would be like HIKE MOTHERFUCKERS and not allowing the ravens to properly adjust. the refs seemed to agree that they would let the ravens properly adjust afterwards, but it was too late at that point. still pretty brilliant though

Belichick has a friend. No really, he does. He's not listed on the Patriots coaching roster... I don't know if he's officially a member of the team or not, be he advises Belichick, and dude basically fills two roles for BB. First, he breaks down numbers of the game moneyball style: the reason the Patriots go for it on 4th more than almost anyone else (and have gone for it on 4th WAY more than any other team in BB's tenure in NE), is because the math says he should. The reason that the Patriots went to the 2 TE set and specifically drafted two murderers in the same year was to make that set work better, because the math said it was a style that would work. Dude can break things down into actual situational successes in a way very few can, and he's a major part of Belichick's success. The other thing that he does, is he brainstorms with Belichick ways to bend the rules.

And oh, the Patriots bend and twist the rules of the game better than anyone. They find those small loopholes and advantages, and they use them brilliantly. In this instance, what the Patriots did was fine and dandy and legal-- the refs just screwed up huge. It is the responsibility of the refs to announce eligibilities/ineligibilities to the defense in a timely manner, and to pause the action to do so. The Patriots are not under that compulsion, and knew it, and ran the plays to take advantage of it. It /was/ brilliant. Was it cheap and dirty? Sure-- and yes, Ninja, it was. Brilliant, though? I agree with Spags-- it absolutely was, and I understand why Harbaugh was pissed. The refs did not do their job, and it may well have cost his team the game.


(Mild edit before posting, because screw actually editing it: Bill's friend is Ernie Adams, and yeah, he's now listed as the Football Research Director for the Patriots. The guy is brilliant, and I think he has more to do with the Patriots success than Brady. His football partnership with Belichick is one of the best pairings in NFL history between any two people, whether it be players, coaches, front office, or adjuncts.)
