Five bucks says Denver is done. I wouldn't be surprised to see the locker room become a cancerous environment late next season. Who wants to go the extra mile when they know how their story ends?

Nobody believes Peyton Manning is going to win another ring. The stars had to align when `he did it` before, with a down Patriot team w/ the flu, "face guarding", Rex Grossman and a defense that showed up to carry him despite all his interceptions. Never gonna' happen. Peyton goes full Cutler the moment the play offs start, and his shitty sulking body language sucks the soul out of his own team like a Shang Tsung Mortal Kombat fatality.

Plus he's a selfish stat-padding bitch. He'll throw murder balls to his receivers in September when its 1st and 10, but wont run five fucking yards in a playoff game to get a guaranteed first down at a crucial time.

It doesn't matter who you are. Even if, as Phil Simms likes to joke fifty times a game, you're "arguably the greatest quarterback of all time," 52 other guys aren't going to give you a pass on that shit, especially when you already have, let us say, a reputation. A whole team is going to have to waste their time so Peyton can break Favre's yard record. Let's see how that guys over late next season.

If Elway is for real here, it's obvious he is either crazy or not really as interested in a Superbowl as he says he is. Denver has a bunch of good, homegrown players, and they're gonna' waste them all on this shit.

So here's the real deal.

Peyton Manning has never had a good coach. The closest is Dungy, and Dungy was almost as bad as Fox. Like, seriously: Peyton has never had a coach able or willing to reel him in.

Manning is immensely talented, but every coach-- and I mean EVERY coach-- has tried to put everything on him, and he's frankly not good enough to carry that load alone. No one is-- the Patriots most spectacular failures in the post season is when they try to put everything on him; their most success has been when Brady was making plays only when he /had/ to. Montana was the same way, and when Elway finally had a team that was good enough to let him do that, he finally won a couple rings.

I legitimately think that Elway understands this truth. Manning has the ability still to win big games, to mount 4th quarter comebacks. The problem is, with Fox, and before with Dungy, and with Caldwell, they were blowing their loads in September and October and November chasing records, instead of treating a Super Bowl like a marathon.

IF Elway brings in a head coach like Kubiak who knows how to instill a powerful running game, and IF the defense moves away from linebacker stats to D-Line and Secondary focus, with linebackers doing what linebackers-not-named-Lawrence-Taylor are supposed to do, then you have a situation very like Elway's, and it's not a bad one to be in. The only way you're accomplishing that this year is if Elway can talk Manning into being like him, and taking a pay cut so the talent on offense (particularly Julius-- Demaryius is exciting as hell, and immensely talented, but man he has a case of the dropsies in big games. He's the Dalton of receivers), and on defense can be maintained/improved, then Denver can become a real team.

Is that what's gonna happen? No clue. We'll see how free agency goes-- I really don't want "big names". I want the guys that fans of the team hate to see go, but casuals never heard of. I want the guys who are better than average and hungry for a big check, but who don't have massive egos. I want chips on every shoulder out there. I want Manning to be a reserve weapon, not a primary threat, someone that everyone has to respect (like Elway was), but that the team doesn't have to hinge on.

I honestly, legitimately do not know what would happen if Manning had a head coach who was anything but passingly mediocre at best, but I like to think that if he'd had Belichick, he'd have less records and more rings. I look at some guys-- Rex, Kubiak come to mind-- and wonder what they could do with a talent like Manning's working in their game plan.

Or, maybe Manning's still Marino, and all he cares about is the Big M, teammates be damned. Elway had that knock, until one year he woke up and changed it. Shanahan was terrible in DC, but what he did in Denver is hard to ignore. If Elway brings in someone similar, someone who can make Manning take a back seat to the team, then Denver becomes a team I can believe in for the first time since the late '90s. If he can't, if it's Manning As Usual, then I hope to hell we can find someone better than Osweiler in the draft soon.
