I am going to ignore the current direction this conversation is taking (because it seems worthless to discuss).

Instead, I'd like for us to consider what we as individuals can do beyond being upset that Russian politicians think it is okay to treat their people like shit.
Its well-noted that Putin and his people do not care what others think of what they do.

In short, if we want to make a difference, we've got to do more than be outraged online. Where next? Any ideas?
(Kinda difficult with it being a different country and culture and all, eh?)

    This appears to be true.
I remembered reading that they were considering lifting the ban, but it doesn't appear that happened..?

as good as any a place to put this, one of the leading members of the Russian opposition and an intractable Putin critic was gunned down in Moscow a few days ago. not to worry though Putin has assumed direct control of the investigation and promised to realize justice.

In his final Newsweek interview, Nemtsov spoke of the need for "an alternative vision, a different idea of Russia. Our idea is the one of a democratic and open Russia. A country which is not applying bandit methods to its own citizens and neighbors."
