from a public policy perspective, this is such a no-fucking-brainer. Glad to see it getting done (even temporarily).
it does beg the pondering of why the wealthiest nation in the history of human civilization has not seen fit to feed its children free of charge hitherto
This is an excellent decision.
But they really need to work on how it's implemented and what the food is.
Because the food is pretty crappy, and the schools end up with tons left over that gets trashed (just fyi, schools can't donate food, what isn't used HAS to be thrown away.)
We were going once a week to pick up the free lunch (hell why not?) and then stopped because the kids wouldn't eat the food and they would give us like ten million cheese sticks and milk.
I tried salvaging the cheese by making mozzarella sticks.
Pro: I learned how to air fry mozzarella sticks.
Con: No seasoning on the planet can hide how absolutely disgusting those cheese sticks were.
For those without kids if you could only see what the school food looks like today...
public school food wasn't any better when we were kids dog miss me with your square pizzas
This is kinda what it looks like, obviously kids don't get all at once:

I have a hunch school food has gotten worse since we were in school. I don't have many memories of elementary school lunch day (outside of tater tot day being a damn mini holiday almost), but Middle/High School for me had variety and some semblance of taste. Yeah, your variety was Mini personal pizza's, large microwavable burrito's, burgers, daily special, salad's, etc. But then I see pictures of what they are giving now, and I swear the inmates at the jail I worked at had better looking food. (except for the ultra rare occurrence of the punishment loaf, but we don't go there.)
Square pizza was awesome, you shut your whore mouth.
Lot of schools out here don't hire lunch ladies anymore.
Trucks come in with mildly reheated crap in sealed containers.
While obviously lunch ladies during our era weren't making things from scratch, it was still better quality.
"Salad" is literally just lettuce now.
yall seen what them French kids be eating for school lunch every day? this country needs to seriously rethink its valuation of the culinary arts.
So at my school we have a grant for this afterschool program called YPI.
YPI purchases these lunch packages that kids can take after school to eat, and they are actually good for school food.
My school can't use it for regular lunch because it's too expensive. So a lot of kids just wait until school is out and grabs the YPI lunch.
I'll see if I can find the name of the company, I forget.
Agreed.
Here's the most frustrating part. M. Obama's health initiative, imo, made kids' long term nutrition worse. It's teaching kids that healthy food is nasty and bland and to starve yourself all day until you get home, when kids binge on chips afterwards. It didn't help at all improve obesity rates in kids at all.
You want to get kids to eat healthy, you gotta pump in more money so schools can make healthy food that tastes good (it exists, I swear).
Also, get more into portion sizes than worrying about what category the food falls under.
Pizza is still considered a veggie, btw. lol....
best school lunch we had was a dish called beef fingers
the pizza was better than the burgers omg i can still taste the trauma those patties inflicted
Best school lunch back in the day for me was this like disgusting looking concoction of gravy with turkey bits that they poured over a scoop of mashed potatoes.
All I remember from school lunch is PB&J erryday
