Rep. Norlin Mommsen, who serves in the state House of Representatives, introduced a bill Tuesday that would mandate all public school classrooms not designated for physical or special education to have cameras streaming a live feed for parents and guardians to view.

Mommsen did not immediately respond to VICE News’ request for comment on the bill. But he told the right-leaning website the Center Square that he introduced the bill to address what pro-book–banning Republican Sen. Jake Chapman, the leader of the Iowa Senate, recently called a “sinister agenda” on the part of educators and members of the press “who wish to normalize sexually deviant behavior against our children, including pedophilia and incest.”

Chapman said last year that teachers who “disseminated” books such as The Hate U Give and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, both young adult books by people of color, should be criminally prosecuted.

Concordia University, in Montreal, has just announced a new course that will be available on their campus — and it's entirely about Kanye West.

Yassin Alsalman is launching a university class to delve further into Kanye West's thinking - the first of its kind. Titled Kanye vs. Ye: Genius by Design - this is a class that joins a list of university-level courses which develop our ideas of modern pop culture icons.

The course will focus on Ye's career, from his early days as a Chicago producer to his present stature as one of pop culture's most important (and divisive) figures.

The course investigates the notions of 'Kanyetive Dissonance,' or the distinctive, complicated, and contentious natures and contexts of Kanye's work, using his albums as a cultural, creative, and personal lens to study the progression of his creativity.

Michigan kindergartners are doing tequila shots now

Alexis Smith's kindergartner had a Dixie cup full of the mixed tequila drink and said she had 4 or 5 sips. Smith and another mom, Dominique Zanders, were baffled when they learned what happened.

Their daughters were each given what they thought was juice during snack time. In reality, they were drinking Jose Cuervo margarita mix at snack time, brought by a fellow kindergartner.

"The girl poured it in her cup and she drank it and the girl ended up telling her what it is, and she went and told the teacher there is liquor in this cup, and the teacher gave her a funny face," Zanders said.

The other little girl had brought the single-serve, pre-mixed drink to school in her backpack.

The school released a statement that says, in part…

"While we try to keep an eye on everything our students bring to school, that’s simply not possible. It’s unfortunate that these types of adult beverages can be easily mistaken for child-friendly drinks."

Free school lunches and the summer food program is set to end at the end of June after congress fails to pass an extension.

Originally passed in March 2020, the waivers granted schools the flexibility to navigate not only the challenges of remote learning and Covid-19, but also the supply chain crisis, the school labor shortage, and steep inflation at the grocery store. The waivers also expanded eligibility for school meals, enabling an additional 10 million students to access free breakfast and lunch each day.

Education leaders assumed Congress would re-extend the meal flexibility for one more year. The waivers, which expire at the end of June, were extended twice before on a bipartisan basis. In February, Democratic Reps. Abigail Spanberger and Suzanne Bonamici and Republican Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick and John Katko introduced the Keeping School Meals Flexible Act to extend them one last time through June 2023, but when Congress passed its $1.5 trillion spending bill in March, the language for school meals was missing. Advocates were stunned, and say this decision alone has already jeopardized access to summer meals for nearly 7 million children.

“There is no urgency and political appetite to even have this conversation,” said Jillien Meier, director of the No Kid Hungry campaign. “Frankly this is not a priority for Congress and the White House. People are really focused on having a ‘return to normal’ ... folks aren’t talking about it and they have no clue that this crisis that is looming.”

A survey from the US Department of Agriculture released in March found 92 percent of School Food Authorities reported supply chain challenges, with products like chicken and bread among the most difficult products to procure. Nearly three-quarters of SFAs also reported staffing challenges, with acute shortages of cooks, drivers, and food prep employees.

Thanks to the waivers, the federal government has covered more of the cost of school meals than usual. This reimbursement flexibility has still just barely allowed school districts to tread water. “Ninety percent of schools are using the waivers and only 75 percent of them are breaking even,” Stacy Dean, USDA deputy undersecretary, told the Washington Post in March.

Without an extension, the average reimbursement could drop by nearly 40 percent. And this drop would occur as schools continue to face higher costs for food and labor.
