@article... pretty atrocious tbqh. Reality has overshot the memes.
I'm sure that it's not the case, though I thought there was an effort the reclaim the word by native groups?

Want to voluntarily relocate my boot in their ass
Idk... White people showed up and literally thought they were in India, so they called the native people Indians. Then, instead of correcting it when they figured out they were on the wrong continent and needed to distinguish them from people that actually live in India, they just threw American in front. "We need to tell the non-whites apart, but are too lazy to correct our mistake" is a hell of a legacy to want to reclaim.
There was at one point. I actually remember a dude from one of the tribes coming in to speak to one of my classes about it in college.
Dunno where that's at now. But it was kind of a "You know what, we just go with it, just to remind them of how fucking dumb they were to think they were in India."
I know at least for the Seminoles that I know, they'd rather just be called Seminoles.
This video is all I know about the conversation.

The majority of all people (non military/imprisoned) aged 25-34 have completed an associates degree or more.
Late and very anecdotal, I have an Xbox friend who is Native, lives in Oklahoma and said some of the people he knew actually liked the various stereotypical 'Indian' team names, Chiefs, Braves, etc. Used to be a school team there called the Savages which I guess was a bit too far and got renamed.
