I remember in my senior year Psyche class I actually did my final report on Xenogears, explaining various themes and such that popped up through the game. Teacher gave me a D because he had no real way to confirm any of it at the time without playing the game himself, and lolthat.

It's a pretty bad practice for teachers not to screen paper topics with students when outside material is being used. Like I wrote a paper in law school that dealt with the representation of legal systems in fiction where the professor had not read one of the works I covered (Atwood's "Oryx and Crake" from the MaddAddam trilogy) so we had to discuss it ahead of time. And I mean, at this point even the works she had read (1984, Brave New World) she hadn't read recently and wouldn't be able to re-read them just to grade me.

Obviously you can quote literature, but now days with YouTube could do it with games too.

There was an angry parent who made a stink this week that our AP Psych teacher talked about evolution. Wasn't even teaching it really, it was just a reference in the context of how certain behaviors evolved to become instinctive due to natural selection.

Gonna be barrels of fun once they find out I'm teaching settler colonialism and critical race theory.

We already have literacy programs. Called public schools. Children in these religious schools already get a substandard education. It's not like kids in them won't read if public funds aren't squandered on them.
