Being able to joke about something is how some people get beyond it. Haven't you seen comedians who are constantly saying how stupid and fat and ugly they are? It's a coping mechanism. Saying "You can't joke about that" is denying a person a way of coping. I don't care who you are, the second you start saying "You can't joke about that", you've already started down the slippery slope. What's funny to you might not be funny to someone else.

Now, I'm not saying you have to LIKE the joke. But you sure as hell can't censor it either.

I pulled lazy results on twitter using the phrases "I'm going to kill" and "I'm going to rape" and found that the not-at-all serious threat of killing someone was unsurprisingly far more prevalent than threatening to rape them. My thoughts are that people are just desensitized to violence nowadays; We all grew up with action blockbusters and Rambo killing entire countries and explosions and everything. Death and murder are a facet of entertainment. Rape, however, isn't. "I'm going to fucking kill you" should be a horrible threat, but it isn't. "I'm going to fucking rape you" is enough to get you a ton more Patreon cash and twitter followers, though.

I'm not sure what my point was. People are dumb and our scale of "this behavior is intolerable" is thrown way the fuck off. I suppose this is where someone tells me that it's worse to be raped than murdered, so rape is the more heinous crime?

This is easy, homie. We live in a socity that places women’s safety, comfort and general well-being at the center of social or political concern.
Despite it not being quite accurate, rape is considered a problem that women have to deal with and therefore it is more important to people than murder where it is very easy to see that men are the primary victims.

To our society, your safety and comfort levels will never be as important as a woman's. Just gotta deal.

...god, I can see the twisted sort of logic to that. See, let's pretend rape and murder are both equally bad. But, 100% of the population can be murdered, and only women can be raped. So the badness of rape is concentrated to make it twice as bad as murder.

maybe society focuses on rape more than murder because everyone knows that murder is bad and the legal system at least sort of works when it comes to murder but there are many people not naming names!!! who dont appear to take rape as seriously, discount rape whenever possible, question victims, and the legal system fails rape victims more often than not, so it might be worth talking about more and being put more in the center of attention

Personally, I would say that rape is worse because the victim still has to live with what was done to them afterwards, and work through that trauma. Obviously being killed is fucking terrible but once you're dead, you're dead, it isn't like the victim is going to need lasting counseling in order to get over it.

And no one in here is saying men can't get raped, at least not that I'm aware of. In fact, it's almost more important to fight for male rape victims because if you think there's a stigma with being a female rape victim, it's soooo much worse for male rape victims. We treat all victims of rape like shit, though, if I'm being honest.

Being raped is not worse then being killed, just for clarification. Yes, both are heinous, but one is definitely worse then the other. I don't think this conversation will go anywhere so long as people legitimately believe people are better off dead then raped. And you still didn't answer the previous question, how does joking about rape trivialize it when joking about murder/slavery doesn't trivialize the acts?

This is probably the worst possible example you could use since it does definitely happen with robberies. Particularly if the person is "somewhere they shouldn't be".
Take yourself to the ghetto, get robbed and then see what kinds of questions they ask you. Its definitely not a rape-specific mindset.

I just want to point out that you're doing that thing where people latch onto rape as being especially terrible when viewed among other crimes.
