Honestly, grouping kids by learning style and maturity (note: not age) would be a better plan. But that takes a LOT of work, is no where near as nice-and-neat as a massively centralized system as we have requires, and would lead to all kinds of administrative headaches. I mean, it'd be best for the kids, but screw them. Second best? Well, boys and girls do tend to have distinct behavioral and learning styles. While there is overlap, boys /tend/ to be more kinesthetic and aggressive; girls tend to be more auditory, group-work oriented and passive. It's a much closer grouping that we get when clustering boys and girls by ages, particularly from 3rd through 9th grade, where the girls start to mature much faster, and are generally more ideal-students for our current classroom environments.

A sex-segregated system would still have diversity, baring completely insular communities. You'd still have diversity of thought, but MORE boys would do better, and no more girls would really be held back than are held back now. You still have plenty of opportunity for interaction-- sports, social/academic clubs, and classes such as art, PE, music, or drama. And, really, once you get to high school, the advantages of sex-segregation disappear more, and the advantages of integration improve.

No, that would be a terrible idea. Homogenization of classrooms would not foster better learning. It never has, and it never would.

I am open to changing that opinion if I'm provided sufficient social study evidence suggesting otherwise. I haven't seen any, so I have no reason to change that right now.

Most modern scholarship on it, though, is finding A) boys are falling increasingly far behind, that B) most modern teaching techniques are more geared toward typical girl learning styles than boy learning styles, and C) separating the two has not had an impact on their ability to interrelate.

This was relevant when I was last in school, if a little outdated now, but the scholarship has been agreeing more and more with it.

http://www.jstor.org/stable/42923774...n_tab_contents It's pretty representative of most of the modern scholarship on single-sex classrooms.

We are increasingly finding that even when boys and girls learn "the same way"-- that is, visually, kinesthetically, aurally, whatever, they still learn them *differently* in those mediums: girls tend to learn better with calmer manipulatives; boys with more active manipulatives. Boys can learn very well aurally in a competitive environment-- listen-and-compete games, for example-- while aurally inclined girls tend to do better with group discussions or conversational approaches. Visually, boys tend to learn very well from diagrams and images, while girls have shown a stronger ability to learn from reading stories. It is not absolute-- everyone learns in a variety of ways, and a lot of times, things work best when there is a bit of everything.

We aren't talking about segregating for ideological reasons: this isn't about FEMINISM or MRA or any of that. It is a very real problem: boys are not learning as well as girls in the same environment, but we have also found that girls in environments where boys dominate are also left behind. We just learn *DIFFERENTLY*.

I have been tutoring now for 21 years. Mostly math through trig (calculus until about a decade after I last took a class), but also reading, social studies, history, and some lower levels of science. I have dealt with kids from rich-as-snot parents who just wanted their A+ student to stay an A+ student, frustrated parents with D- kids who they didn't know how to help (and who, sometimes, didn't want to be helped), and everything in between. Every single kid is different, but there are definitely general trends, and there are usually 6 ways I can reach most kids; once I figure out which one works on that kid, if they are willing to work at things too, there's almost never a failure. We're better able to help them learn in the classroom, too, but learning their style, and looking for that to be when they pay the most attention-- you would be amazed at how many kids see math as a formula, for example, don't understand it at all, convince themselves they are stupid, and just never open up later. Once they learn they CAN learn it, once they know how THEY can learn it, they can apply the abstract written to the understood. kinesthetic or aural or whatever. I've helped in classrooms, and you see a lot of this going on: a lot of kids who don't get something right away-- and especially if the secondary method used isn't their primary method of learning-- give up. They figure they don't get it, and ... well, we don't have time in the classroom to do 6 teaching types for every type of instruction. We just don't. And so kids will lose out on key parts-- in places like math, that are built on previous lessons, that can just be devastating for YEARS.

Thats probably why most of the higher end private schools are either for boys or girls only?

None of the ones I know of are boys or girls only.

Where I grew up, there was one mid-tier jock-centric high school that was boys only and no girls only schools, so everyone else ended up with a 60:40 girl:boy ratio. I'll take it.

Back in montreal, when i was a kid there were 2 all girls schools (villa maria, sacred heart) and 3 all boys schools that i know of (loyola, selwyn house, LCC), the latter became co-ed in 1996 or 1997. There were probably more too.

Non of the fancy private schools in my area are boys or girls only. What they do though is smaller class sizes and tailoring learning to each individual child. It is time consuming but for schools that expensive they better do something like that.

A lot of the single-sex schools tend to be that way more for tradition's sake than because of it's improved learning potential. They also have much smaller class sizes-- like, it would be an incredibly uncommon boarding school to have class sizes as large as in Dead Poet's Society. 12-14 is pretty common; some of the more elite will have even less. You'll also find a lot more single-sex schools on the east coast than in, say, California (though the Seattle area has a very prominent all-girls school; I am unaware of a significant all-boys school in the area). A fair number of those that resisted co-eding are also boarding schools.

The fanciest, highest-end private schools also tend to have ready access to tutors, and a ton of other advantages stemming from the kinds of homes that tend to send kids to the fanciest, highest-end private schools. Again, though, that's kind of part of the tradition (and, from experience, being the scholarship kid who is NOT from that kind of background is really, really rough).

Newer private schools from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s tend to be coed. The newest, though, are moving back to single-sex at increasing rates, and some of the slightly older ones are shifting. And, a lot of the traditional schools are updating their teaching methods as more and more researching into how boys and girls learn differently and learn best.

It's somewhat interesting (at least to me), how little research has been done on the topic until the last 15 years... for the medical folks out there, it's somewhat akin to how little research was done on the differences between symptoms in heart attacks or strokes in men and women, and the realization that there IS a difference has saved a lot of lives. When serious, academic pushes were made in improving education, particularly in the 60s, 70s, and 80s when colleges began to have huge influxes of students, most of the techniques that improved overall child education were improving the ways that girls learned, because girls were initially so far behind. As the techniques became more and more ingrained, a lot of the research and theory was devoted to expanding those ideas, and furthering them: after all, for a while, it was seriously improving the overall education standards, and everyone's equal. The Rush Limbaugh's of the world would call it an agenda, there are MRAs who probably would, too, but really it was no more deliberately sexist than medical research that didn't realize women and men are different.

So to get this back on topic.

Sitting here with this guy from Glasgow and chick from Jersey (yeah, go figure).
Having a conversation that goes into buying women drinks. I said despite an exception once that I never buy women drinks. We either get out of the place or not.
In true Jersey girl/American woman fashion I get the whole:
"Women deserve drinks we go through so much more shit than you guys."

To which I decided to throw the gasoline down with "Oh, woah is me I was born with a vagina. Give me free drinks because you want sex and I'm indirectly manipulating you. Something something equality."

I'm a woman allow me to list all the disadvantages constantly to lobby for myself while never listing all the advantages.

    Gimme a break.

You misunderstand my post. Your post isn't terrible because it is hard to understand it is terrible because it is written like a stream of conscious though instead of an attempt at communicating with others. Do you talk like that in real life? I half expect random words like monkey, trombone, and dildo to pop up in the middle of your posts.

Mhm, talk to me on Skype for 5 minutes and decide.

I did also not read it carefully. I'm bad at doing that sometimes.
