I do believe Nigeria is not an ally of the UN.

Additionally, the US offered Nigeria assistance with the kidnappings a few months ago, and we were refused. When Boko Harem tried to abduct more people, the Nigerian government finally requested assistance, so we sent them some troops. However, politics have made US operations there pretty shaky. They want help, but don't want the US fully involved.

I guess the point is, most news agencies don't really report based on relevance, it's more reporting based on what's more at stake in terms of importance to the world. Boko Harem isn't new, but their activities are not as far-reaching or widespread as ISIS. ISIS threatens the entire free world, where Boko is still very much contained (for the most part).

This latest massacre was overshadowed by the Paris attacks, nothing more. Mutual aid poured in for the kidnappings and the Nigerian government threw it back in the faces of those who would help them.

Millions of people die every day. What's forefront for US and UK news is who's attacking our allies. Nigeria is fucked sideways, plain and simple. They allowed this to happen to themselves, and instead of appealing to world leaders for assistance, they've allowed their country to be taken by terrorists. Big picture stuff right there; sorry folks, no one cares. At least, no one cares now that they've rejected aid time and again because of their fear of first world countries like the US.

the difference in coverage between Boko Haram and ISIS stems from the latter posing a readier danger to civilized nations given their expansionism, radicalization of western civilians, targeting of western reporters and aid workers within their borders, and stated desire to carry out terrorist strikes on foreign targets. the Boko Haram insurgency is more reminiscent of Al Shabab surging to control the majority of Somalia or the Taliban emerging from the wreckage of the Afghan Civil War in that the issue is primarily local. the quantitative difference in coverage is further accentuated by ISIS's sophisticated social media presence, their novelty (Boko Haram was founded in 2002, no one knew who ISIS were until Mosul fell), and the fact that Iraq was already on the American radar in a way Nigeria is not, for obvious reasons.

as with early Al Shabab or the Taliban (who were taken out for associating with and then sheltering the wrong people, not any action they directly took) Boko Haram is a regional body with parochial concerns that may rip apart their own country but hitherto are incapable or unwilling to export violence. have more in common with the guerrilla movements of South America than with AQII or ISIS, happen to be Muslims instead of Marxists.
