Since Ive had some time since the previous of whether or not gid/dysphoria was or wasn't in the DSM I wanted to approach the actual issue at hand and not the offensiveness of labels and pronouns. I contend that the sjw crusade for declassification is more detrimental that the offensiveness of the label. If it is removed from the DSM and ICD, would that not also remove their right to accurate and cost effective treatment? If I'm correct you wouldn't be able to get hrt if there isn't a condition to treat, no? Lee search wouldn't be put into something that wasn't listed as a condition and then it might fall off not an elective category ,at best, further raising the cost. And then you have insurance issues, if they don't cover hrt now like they should, wouldn't it being considered not a disorder remove that possibility altogether? I think that them having a right to treatment under proper medical care for a simple and cost effective complete transition is more important, and if the cost of that requires it to carry the word disorder like so many other things then so be it. Isn't the long term happiness more important than the words? Sorry if this came across ham-fisted.

Was listening to NPR and they did a piece on transgender children in school. Obviously this is blowing up the internet comments section but I kinda wanted you guy's views on this. I had the strangest reaction to this article as I was listening. I'm usually very supportive of transgendered people, but it was something about the righteous outrage in Jace's voice when being interviewed that was offputting.
I know it takes a ton of bravery to be openly transgendered, and that an upcoming generation can be taught tolerance but I'm wondering how this will be handled when these children get into the real world where telling someone "My real name is Jace. And my birth name is none of your business." could cost you a job if you refuse to put your birth name on an application.
A legal name change is usually taken care of pretty soon after someone starts presenting as their appropriate gender full time. For people who transition young it's most likely a non issue as it's not that hard to have your name changed with a school once the new name is legal. This is a much more complicated issue for people who transition later in life. Using your legal name is not going to cost anyone a job when your only reference is a school where your new legal name is the name in their system.
Yeah, I was thinking about that after I posted and you hit it on the head.
The only thing that I hope for the Tumblr generation is that they realize that getting outraged at everything isn't going to immediately have the world bend to their will. It takes a lot of grit to stand against he tide, and the horrible comments in the article and on the Facebook post aren't going to change anytime soon for older folks.
I read further into the comments there. That's actually far more civilized than most comment sections following articles about trans folk.
Edit: it's because they're deleting a lot of posts apparently.
I tend to roll my eyes when someone says they don't like girls/boys toys. Is this really an indicator that something is chemically/mentally wrong with a child...? Just so people don't flip their lids too, when I say wrong I don't mean that with a bad connotation, I mean like not typical or whatever the hell. Preemptive calm yourself.
To add onto this, I don't think a child is transgendered if they're a boy who likes to wear dresses or enjoys girls cartoons. I feel like parents nowadays are going to instantly assume their child is something they're not all because of reading into it too much. Assuming a child is trans- or even gay because they like girls stuff is like WebMDing your cough and thinking you have throat cancer.
Or thinking a kid who is easily distracted has autism or the other thing.
so it turns out I identify as mostly female (inner gender, not outer - I love my penis and my body). I think I'm like... I dunno, 35% male 65% female on the inside. something like that. maybe a little more toward the 50/50 side... it's a hard thing to put a number on.
just thought I'd share. dunno if anyone else identifies as partly or completely a different gender from their body, but still identifies with their body as well. it's... kinda cool, to finally figure this out.
Liking musicals doesn't make you a woman on the inside don't worry.
no, but being a strong proponent of "I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO TELL YOU" and "NOTHING'S WRONG, IT'S FINE" just might.
I kid, but I am definitely emotionally female, at least from the heteronormative perspective.
I think it's great that you've come to terms with yourself, and that trans and non-binary gender issues are becoming more known, so that more people can begin to identify themselves and feel more comfortable with themselves. I know that people sincerely question what "awareness" does, but this is what it does - it gives people who might not know or understand who they are a chance to see and identify with it.
I don't even understand how you can identify as a certain gender mentally considering that you are using the gender stereotypes as a frame of reference as to what gender you truly believe you are while also being proponents for the dismantling and destructive nature of said gender stereotypes.
How do you identify as a man or a woman without listing a single gender stereotype to back it up?
Do you like dresses? Do you like musicals? Are you emotional?
Honestly, you need to get past the idea that there are just two genders. Gender is a spectrum, and there are many different places within that spectrum that you can identify with. I personally identify 100% female and I was born female, but I know plenty of people who don't identify that strongly with either gender.
You completely missed the point.
What is identifying as female? Without using gender stereotypes.
Can liking welding be my reason for identifying as female? Tuning up cars? Loving interior design? What Female specific thing is one of your many reasons for identifying as a female other than biology?
