First, I must say I thank BG forums for educating me more about this subject matter. Something came up today that now has me questioning whether I was being insensitive to a coworker or if I'm justified at being frustrated and angry at her.
So I posted this in the random fail yesterday: http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/109...=1#post6410997
I have had about a day to calm my emotions at how frustrated I was. And today I learn that this coworker is a biological male identifying as female. I was thinking he was gay in my mind, but a female coworker told me that he is a she and prefers the use of 'she' and she uses the female restrooms all the time. For the sake of identifying my transgender coworker, I'll use Jane so I'm not confusing anyone. I also have 6 years of seniority on Jane but equal job titles.
So Jane's actions have been confusing me. When Jane's with women, Jane acts very feminine. Jane wears make up to work and my other coworker showed me her own facebook feed with Jane wearing dresses on the weekend. In the presence of a crowd majority of men, Jane has that 'Bro' masculine behavior. And when Jane gets aggressive when things don't line up in Jane's favor, Jane typically fights for what Jane wants and does not want to compromise.
So with that set up and me being a bit confused on how to react mentally. Am I hating Jane for being a crappy coworker who doesn't consider my group seniority? Or am I being insensitive towards Jane for not considering every request Jane has? Jane has told me to consider Jane's feelings more when in the end all I want done is work and I couldn't give 2 cents about how anyone feels. I am genuinely angry and frustrated at Jane as a coworker professionally that I am attaching it to Jane personally.
With any person I don't get along with, I make it a point to disassociate with people and coworkers who make me miserable. I want to do that to this person but Jane will continue to engage me, and I'm getting tired of it. Work is supposed to be work and after repeated mediation with my supervisor over disputes, and despite me being angry at Jane's actions, Jane still wants to be friends and have my respect, something I don't want. I'll help Jane pick up heavy objects, but I'll be damned to socially interact with Jane anymore. I don't know if I'm mentally being a shitbag or if Jane is being so inflexible and emotional that Jane has to have things bend to Jane's liking.
I guess as an aside, I have met an awesome transgender man by the name of Miles Jai back when I was helping my friend produce youtube content. This community and that day working with Miles did open my eyes to the transgender world. So maybe I hate Jane and not Jane's gender decisions? I don't know. I'm confused.
I guess it wouldn't be justice not to share the video Miles was featured in that is quite educational.
They're people too and not exempt from the rule that people = shit. If you were irritated with this person's behavior before finding out that they identify as something other than what they appear to be, then clearly it's the behavior that irritates you. This is the danger with people becoming overly sensitive to issues of race, gender, etc - it makes you feel shitty for not liking someone even when there's a good reason. The victim complex is so strong it makes other people feel like oppressors/bigots for honest criticisms.
There's nothing wrong with thinking someone is a shitty person if they're a shitty person with different attributes imo.
It doesn't seem like you have any issues about the person being transgender nor do you have any actual questions about transgender people so the post seems off topic.

Can I not?
I've no issues with calling him/her whatever they want to be called, as long as it's not another Kardashian publicity stunt. I'm getting tired of that shit.
Yo, if she changed her face and got tits just for the publicity lol, that's some fucking dedication.
No, I don't.
Are you unclear on the pronoun associated with the Caitlins of the world in the English language?
Cause I mean, you literally fucked up the first possible opportunity you had to call her what she wants to be called.
I think he raises an interesting point, similar to one that's been raised before. These are people that have proven themselves willing to do anything to continue their undeserved 15 minutes of fame. If someone is acting out in order to seek attention, do they deserve the respect of calling them whatever they say to call them? Even as it extends into absurdity (i.e. I identify as an attack helicopter, my pronouns are x/y/z)?
Granted, I don't think it's likely that Jenner is attention seeking. But I do think it's possible. It's certainly something to think about as we move ever closer to this "do whatever people say because if you don't you're disrespecting them" society.
You guys realize that Jenner is not and never has been a Kardashian, right?
(and that Jenner is deservedly famous, of course)
Are you saying that only Kardashians can be attention whores?
ya when i sit around and think of ways to extend my fame one of the first thigns that comes to mind is always "go through one of the most difficult transitions imaginable in an extremely public manner"
I think the kardashians are the worst to happen to the U.S.
I also think anyone that thinks Caitlin is doing this for attention is insanely ignorant about her.
