Bush, while not a very bright bulb, did not fall into the same type of extreme right that most of the gop candidates since then have been.

McCain and Romney aren't "extreme right" candidates. Neither is Jeb Bush. There's crazies out there, but they haven't gotten the nomination since Barry Goldwater.

The problem is that the primaries give too much weight to the extremists who like the crazies. Even those normal candidates have to appease them to make it to the nomination. Remember during the early period leading up to the 2012 election where the polls bounced from one candidate to the next as long as it wasn't Romney?

And also, if I'm not mistaken, Santorum was the runner-up to Romney, and he's definitely one of the crazies.
