He's not even going to make it two months before he either has to take the Republicans off the cliff with another shutdown or cut a deal to keep government open which will bring the Freedom Caucus right back into revolt against the speakership. The only sane move he would have would be to form a coalition with Democrats to minimize the Freedom Caucus so he could get some things done, but that's complete fanfiction.

Boehner, McCarthy and other GOP leaders are refusing at this point to move ahead with a "clean" debt ceiling bill insisted on by President Barack Obama. Senior leadership aides said they couldn't find the 30 Republican votes needed to join with all 188 Democrats to pass that proposal — a bleak indication of the current state of play.

Now, House Republican leadership is saying Democrats need to give up something in order to convince a "minimum number" of GOP lawmakers to avoid a lapse in the borrowing limit.

I don't understand this mentality of holding the global financial system hostage in order to extract concessions from the opposition. The GOP already won -- they got the sequester. And now they're mad because they want to undo the part of the sequester they don't like (defense cuts) without raising non-defense spending or taxes. Maybe they can resolve this by agreeing to something on the defense bill in exchange for getting enough GOP votes to cross the finish line on a debt ceiling raise, but seriously, they are playing with fire and if they want to put the House in play in 2016 this is an excellent way to do it.

The GOP doesn't care. They're unwilling to negotiate for X item unless they get Y.

They sit on their throne until a 'compromise' is achieved by getting defense, abortion, or some sort of gun provision exchange for doing something that seems routine. Then they will consider it a win.

Democrats didn't vote after the 2013 shutdown so the GOP got a majority in the senate. So they didn't learn a damn thing and thus are free to do whatever they want. Because as long as people don't vote, assholes will stay in power and not give a fuck about what it is they're doing.

He's on his way out and the Republicans are grinding the entire government to a halt by acting like children (again). Seems to me Obama is giving them a bit of a taste of their own medicine, which of course is making them flip their shit.

From what I read he didn't veto because it was over budget, he vetoed it because he didn't like the provisions.

It was a little bit of both spending and provisions. Democrats and Obama are trying to find a budget compromise that lifts both defense and non-defense spending together. Republicans wanted to lift just defense spending in this bill, giving them more leverage in the budget talks by already getting part of what they want. It also included a provision that would tie Obama's hands on trying to close down Gitmo.
