What an odd position to have. Do you not care what people you let into your home as well? This is our country, and I think it should matter to all of us who we're letting in.

No, they should live and improve their own country. I don't fault them for wanting a better life, I fault them for thinking that they deserve a better life so much that they can claim their very lives are imperiled (even though they may be from an area that's relatively safe inside the country) in order to take a refugee slot from someone who actually needs it.

I won't even bother responding to bum's ridiculous post. I mean honestly, I'm about the least die-hard "rah rah USA" person there is. I just live in the real world where it's simply unfeasible for us to take care of the entire planet's population, and I acknowledge when a meaningless public relations stunt is being done. There's something 4 billion people on the planet living in various levels of squalor and violence-ridden shitholes. We simply can't help all of them. Helping a few hundred thousand is nothing more than PR. So go ahead and feel good about yourselves for supporting it, while billions more are starving, uneducated, and riddled with preventable and curable diseases.

Focusing so much on the least of humanity, trying to raise them up, wastes the potential of the best of humanity. It's basically No Child Left Behind on a global scale. It's fucking retarded. We can't do anything on a global scale for massively improving conditions until we have unlimited free energy, more than we could ever use as a species. But we'll never get to point so long as we keep throwing our resources at a stupidly huge military (in order to police the world's shitholes) and the money pit that is foreign aid.

Actually, it does. Not every country "corrected" itself through history. Many ran away to found new colonies, many were conquered and reformed. We're at a time where there's no new land to found a new country, and war is generally frowned upon if the powers that be do not want it.

ISIS is something that the people there could potentially stand up and defeat, and we're certainly seeing a bit of that. On the other hand, quite a few central american countries are such total shitfests I can see how you'd consider reformation too far off and nearly impossible to pull off. The strength and brutality of mexican cartels is nothing short of comic book villainous.

Just imagine how laughable the cartels would become if cocaine was legalized in the US. Their primary source of money with which they buy weapons and bribe police/politicians with would vanish overnight and it would be a slow decay as they micromanage the remaining funds they have over the following years. It's not as fun as prolonged guerrilla warfare but it would actually do something to immediately dent their power.

You'll note that I said "an area that's relatively safe inside the country", not that the whole country is. Syria, for instance, only has ISIS presence in about 30% of the occupied areas. I'd be really interested to find out which cities most of the refugees are coming from, but I'd be willing to bet a majority of them are coming from the western Syrian cities, where Hezbollah/regime control is (and ISIS has virtually no presence).

As an immigrant who recently became a citizen, I don't really get the whole "our country" patriotic bullshit. We are all humans and everyone strives for a better life. No need to place artificial barriers on people based on where they are born.

Pretty much. Good friend of mine the other day while walking around with some friends in Texas was called a fucking terrorist by some random lady. Born and raised in California, moved to Austin for a gaming job, but a terrorist because he's not a white christian. I just fucking hate people at this point.
