He and his supporters also rarely acknowledge that Bernie needs the superdelegate system in order to win. He doesn't need it to not exist. He needs it to exist and vote for him.

While some have already made plans to masturbate to the inevitable coronation in Philadelphia on July 25th, Chris Hedges, along with many other O.G.s in the activist community, plan on keeping their dignity in-tact.

In our system of inverted totalitarianism, the political philosopher Sheldon Wolin pointed out, the object is to demobilize the citizenry, to render it apathetic, to convince the citizen that all political activity that does not take place within the narrow boundaries defined by the corporate state is futile. This is a message hammered into public consciousness by the corporate media, which serve as highly paid courtiers to the corporate elites. It is championed by the two parties that offer up fear of the other as their primary political platform.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton hold the highest candidate disapproval ratings in American history—in that order. These two candidates, the system insists, are the only “rational” options. Step outside the system and you are disappeared or ridiculed. Acceptable political opinions, as Wolin wrote, are “measurable responses to questions predesigned to elicit them.” We vote, in the end, for skillfully manufactured personalities. Neither Trump nor Clinton in office will hinder corporate hegemony. Nothing will change until we revolt, until we defy the corporate system, until we wake from our civic stupor. The goal of the elites is to keep us pacified.

The crucial element that sets off inverted totalitarianism from Nazism is that while the latter imposed a regime of mobilization upon its citizenry, inverted totalitarianism works to depoliticize its citizens, thus paying a left-handed compliment to the prior experience of democratization,” Wolin wrote in “Politics and Vision.” “Where the Nazis strove to give the masses a sense of collective power and confidence, Kraft durch Freude (or ‘strength through joy’), the inverted regime promotes a sense of weakness, collective futility that culminates in the erosion of the democratic faith, in political apathy and the privatization of the self. Where the Nazis wanted a continuously mobilized society that would support its masters without complaint and enthusiastically vote ‘yes’ at the managed plebiscites, the elite of inverted totalitarianism wants a politically demobilized society that hardly votes at all.”

This seems like a fancy rewrite of the age old "will 1984 or Brave New World be more accurate" question. It's fairly obvious Brave New World was on the right track, as noted by this guy here. We, as a species, are biologically predisposed to focusing on the newest distraction. People with power were bound to use that for their own ends sooner or later. Distract people by telling them that "institutional racism" is the reason their lives suck and suddenly 15% of the voting populous can't be bothered to vote, because what would it change? Another 15% gets medicated into apathy, being told that their depression as a result of the circumstances they were born into is a "chemical imbalance" and that they should try all the drugs on the market until something makes them forget how shitty their lives are. Another 15% gets distracted by escapism entertainment (many of us on this forum are guilty, myself included), whether that be video games or reality TV. So basically, archi is ruining America.

"Step outside the system and you are disappeared or ridiculed", fucking lol

As I've said before, I wouldn't dare tell anyone I know I support Hillary unsolicited. Even when asked, I'd rather tactfully deflect than make my dissent known most of the time

I can tell none of you have ever protested anything worth of value in your entirely comfortable lives. It's my fault for bringing such "radical" concepts as protesting the continuation of more suffering caused by war, deportation, incarceration, and economic strife.

Dismissing Hedge's commentary as just some #staywoke bullshit speaks volumes of how little you read outside of the establishment's punditry. "This old white man is saying hip radlib things to get clicks!" It rings so true, I can't tell you how many so-called radical lefties who spend their time educating the deadbeats in prison or constantly being arrested for protesting war (who does that anyways? Everyone knows Iraq/Afg war is bad, protesting is silly).

The irony here is that while Bernie promises much of the same imperialistic policies, he was part of the protests in front of the White House (you know, those ones where silly hippies chain themselves to the gate) that kept people talking about Obama's 2014 budget plan to call for imposing a so-called chained CPI formula, which he has now done a 180 on. The victory (for now) that was won against KS XL pipeline is the same story. Protestors do real work in this country, not just when it is politically popular or convenient (i.e. when gay marriage was down the home stretch and all the liberal celebs finally jumped on board).

LARPing at protests is the dumbest and most anti-American description I've ever heard, though. Maybe you would call it something different if it were a stereotypical BernieBro call-to-action, not folks who recognize the ledge in which the most vulnerable stand right now.
