2016 USA Presidential election thread I: The warm-up

the problem is that a) we know poor presidents don't change minds b) Trump is not going to ruin America- he's probably just going to screw up the SCOTUS for a while and stall the progressive agenda. Both of those things are terrible by comparison, because we could be, you know, doing the exact opposite

and you tow a dangerous line in encouraging Stein just among those who won't have an actual impact. At the risk of condescending, anyone voting for Stein in the first place probably doesn't understand whether or not they have an impact

If these two assholes are the best the two mainstream parties can offer, then I'll vote for a third party. I do not want either of the current nominees to be president, so to be quite honest if voting for a third party means that trump takes office, fuck it, punish america for its stupidity in selecting both of these toolbags as nominees.

I just think that if you're naive enough to think that you actually have a choice, and that your choice matters, why not vote for someone who actually has views that you agree with? Instead of the lesser of the two evils of the establishment candidates?

If you don't think that there is a choice, and that your vote doesn't matter, you literally have nothing to lose by voting for a third party candidate instead of abstaining.

I personally don't think any of it matters. I think our next president has already been chosen for us, all of this is just political theater, give us a ridiculous candidate on one side that has positions no one except a racist minority can support, only to justify electing a slightly less terrible candidate on the other side of the aisle, made to seem a much more reasonable choice only because her opponent is actually bat shit crazy, or pretends to be on camera, at the very least.

I think Hilary could eat a baby on the steps of the white house during a press conference and still be the next president of the united states.

Because sometimes you don't have a choice, so the only thing you can do I'd what does the least damage.

A person bleeds out on the operating table and my ONLY options are"let them bleed out" and "transfuse blood" because administration says we can't continue to operate due to lack of personnel and equipment I'm not going to go "NO. FUCK THE ESTABLISHMENT, LET'S TAKE THE RISKIER ROUTE AND TRY TO SAVE THEM NOW". I'm going to stave off death until I can get more resources.

Here's why they can't win. The electoral system isn't designed for 3 parties. If a large number of people vote 3rd party, the votes will be split and no one will hit the magic 270 electoral votes. And Paul Ryan will get to pick Trump as the next POTUS.

Ding Ding Ding. Even if you managed to get a 3rd party candidate 40% of the electorate, you would still lose when the republicans choose a republican president in the House.

What happens if no presidential candidate gets 270 Electoral votes (50%)?

If no candidate receives a majority of Electoral votes, the House of Representatives elects the President from the 3 Presidential candidates who received the most Electoral votes. Each state delegation has one vote. The Senate would elect the Vice President from the 2 Vice Presidential candidates with the most Electoral votes. Each Senator would cast one vote for Vice President. If the House of Representatives fails to elect a President by Inauguration Day, the Vice-President Elect serves as acting President until the deadlock is resolved in the House.

The problem with 3rd parties, beyond the logistics of the electoral college, is that Stein and Johnson are either horribly inexperienced running on a ridiculously naive platform (Stein) or running on an incredibly destructive platform (Johnson).

They are both significantly worse choices than Hillary.
