The states should change to a canadian style election system, we don't vote directly for the prime minister, we vote for local MP's that represent each party, and those MP's translate to seats in the house of commons, and the leader of whichever party wins the majority of seats becomes prime minister, last election we had 4 parties running, Liberals, Conservatives, NDP, and The Green Party.

Even if the party you vote for doesn't get many seats in the House, they still HAVE seats in the House and have a voice.

The only person that can save the Republican party is Tim Tebow.

THe problem with our system is that you have to vote for the party you want. If the person in your riding is a complete doofus or inept it you still have to vote for them if you want their party in power.

Yeah, and then when the votes are split up so evenly between 4 parties that the person who wins PM does so with only 30% of the vote, what do you say when 70% of the population doesn't agree with the positions he takes?

Each system has its pros and cons, and you deal with them like a big boy. Voting 3rd party in America, at this point in history, is a waste of a vote (arguably even in solid states). Stop your bitching, stop your booing, and vote. If Trump wins and your district went red because you voted anything except blue, fuck you buddy.

I mean, Trump ran through out the entire primary with votes only totalling in the 30%~ range, and you saw the turmoil that alone brought to the party. Imagine if our entire country was stuck with a President that only received 30% of the total vote, it'd be crazy.

If Hillary can't beat Donald fuckin Trump, then I'm sorry the last people you get to blame is 3rd party voters. What an embarrassment.

If the vote was at this moment in time, than I disagree. I haven't seen statistics on berniebros, but if they're as loud as they think they are then they might have an effect on the election.

This'll probably change in a month tho.

Without run-offs or proportional representation, a third party will almost always function primarily as spoiler to the major party they are ideologically closer to. Therefore a third party candidate's campaign is only viable when a) it gets enough support (50%+) so that the major party candidate closer to them doesn't prevent them from reaching 50% or b) they get more support than the major party candidate closer to them such that the major party candidate steps down to prevent being the spoiler themselves.

If the third party candidate needs to convince people their campaign is viable, they don't have the base level support to meet either condition.

in a world where people don't vote the party line. An enchilada could be the republican nominee and most of the right would still vote for it

Well I imagine an enchilada would do a better job of courting Latino voters.

I agree that not every MP is great, but i'd rather still have a multiple choice election then a True or False choose the best answer type election

There is literally no functional difference between a Lib+Green coalition and what we call Democrats. You team up with the people closest to you ideologically until you reach 50%+ of representatives. You just don't vote at the national level -at all- so that choice we have is made for you.

Well with a parliamentary system you end up with the shit show that we've got going in the UK.

The Conservatives ran a year ago with Cameron as their leader pushing his brand of right-wing compassionate conservatism tough on immigration soundbites. Got themselves a majority government. EU referendum didn't go Cameron's way, so he quits as leader of the Conservatives. He's still an MP. For a couple of weeks he was still Prime Minister.

Then the Conservative Party selected their new leader, Teresa May, and it didn't even go to a vote of party members because the other candidate remaining, Andrea Leadsom, dropped out. So now our PM has an electoral mandate of 199 people, all of them fellow Conservative MPs.

    Democracy! Mother of parliaments!

I have friends and relatives who plan on voting Trump just because he's the Republican nominee.

    That's an embarrassment.

Because people totally dislike Hillary because of the boundless merits of Donald J. Trump.
