With a new Star Wars trilogy in the works, comedian and filmmaker Mel Brooks says he’s actively working on a sequel to his iconic spoofing Spaceballs, which would begin filming after the December 2015 release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

During a recent appearance on Adam Carolla’s Take a Knee podcast, Brooks confirmed his desire to make the film, which would be entitled Spaceballs: Search For More Money. He said his intention is to bring back as many as the film’s original cast members as possible, including Rick Moranis, who has all but retired from acting in recent years.

In a 2014 interview with Parade, Brooks mentioned that screenwriter Tom Meehan had “some great ideas” for a sequel. However, Moranis’ participation (or lack thereof) has proved the biggest obstacle. “Without Rick, I wouldn’t do it,” Brooks explained. “I’ve got the helmet in storage, just waiting for him.” He added that he’s spoken with Moranis a few times over the years, but he’s “really strict” about remaining retired.

Sounds like there's a chance this could get made. I have mixed feelings. This movie introduced me to the awesome that is Mel Brooks. I loved Spaceballs and would love a sequel. But with John Candy and Joan Rivers dead, I just don't know....

Only if Brooks were to use the same kind of comedy. Sadly that kind of comedy has dissipated since the mid 90's. I would hope to assume he would do a direct spoof of the transition to episode VII though. Old cast partially reprising their roles etc.

Sadly, this is true. I really don't think Blazing Saddles could be made in todays Hollywood.

To extend his franchise, he could just spoof Episodes I-III for now, giving them time to release more than just Episode VII. Its not like it would be hard, the prequels were a pretty good joke as is.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that this title (The search for more money) was referenced as the name of the sequel, in the Schwarz' merchandise store scene.

That alone makes the title choice awesome, imo.

This and The Incredibles 3 are sitting on knifes edge for me. They will either be amazing like their predecessors or hot garbage.

I mean its charming, hope they get the vibe right and it doesn't end up like a modern "Scary Movie". I mean one could argue the original Spaceballs, and the genre spoofs of their time, were a precursor to the "scary movie" franchise... but you know what I mean... quality wise.

Whatever, I hope its good, it wont capture the charm of the original because sequels never do, but I can hope for some good laughs.
