It's clear the NFL has no idea (or cares about) what it's doing with a lot of things (domestic violence, marijuana, etc), however, the thing the NFL cares about and knows about is its reputation and its image. Why did Rice get suspended for the whole season (after the first two games), not because of the domestic violence, but because the NFL looked bad.
And you're right NL, if this were any other team, it likely would not have received the same attention and therefore the NFL would not have to respond. Like I said earlier, it's all about the optics of this issue -- off the top of my head, I could imagine Denver, the sea-chickens, and the Cowboys eliciting similar responses from the NFL.
