    Heavy Skyrim Modding

So i have never done any heavy moddifications in any game i have played. I was talking to a friend who recently started to desire making mods for games and Skyrim was going to be a start. Because of this I was interested in seeing what was available for enhancing Skyrim and its gameplay and I am completely blown away with the amount of additional work people have put into the game. I knew it became better but i had no idea that it got to a point where it is basically a different game altogether.

I am lost and uncertain how to even begin looking. Every search comes with different instructions on how to go about setting it up and all with different mods. So i have come to you guys after a day of browsing to ask what are currently the best mods to download for the best experience. I like my games difficult and challenging. Better lore and obviously graphics. Anything else you guys think i should add in would be appreciative. I am deleting everything i have on Skyrim and start from a clean sheet.

I already downloaded Skyrim (SKSE), made a nexus account so far.

For the Admins, i was unable to find the Skyrim forums to post this in. I also would like to see if you guys can start a modding forum of released games. Something i think would be a great asset for people like me to go to when lost or just wanting to link/comment on.

Have nexus, what does boss/loot do for you?

Edit: Decided on Loot after some searching and followed the forums.

It autosorts your addons so they load in the correct order to not crash on load

So, what mods would everyone here find the most enjoyable and most stable? Are there mod packages or only can download individual ones?

My game keeps crashing on start-up after the loading screen, i have a great computer and can easily run the game 2x over with few issues. I just don't know what is causing the crash without going through one by one. That could take quite a bit of time.

    Any ideas?

Download loot to sort your addons. If th at doesnt work. You have no choice but one by one

This pretty much. If you look through the BOSS/LOOT log it sometimes shows you the problem mod. Sometimes you do have to figure it out manually. Using Logic helps though, unload all the mods that add to the game code. Mods that just add items or textures you can just keep as is.

(We're loading Top to Bottom here AFTER sorting with BOSS/LOOT.)
So when you unload all the ones you need to, just load up a batch of 5, launch the game, no crash, load 5 more. Eventually you will crash and at that point you'll want to do one by one.

What is usually happening is, you chose an option in a particular mod, that screws with another mod. Rarely is it an entire mod, although it happens if you don't know wtf you're doing. So its all a good learning experience anyways. I remember this one time I had a mod that used to be required for another mod to work (SPIKE.esm) and apperently (since I was bringing it over from a previous install) the updated mod didn't require it anymore and it was causing a crash. Another time (this one took me a while), I had to go through some 200 mods to figure out what was causing the crash, and it ended up being an option I chose in this one particular mod (Harvest Overhaul?). It was an option that required you to have another mod which I hadn't downloaded. So I just reinstalled the mod with the correct option, and bam.

It's hard and tedious work, but when you get it running, its like... getting a BJ after a really long time. Good Luck.

When I started Skyrim I just googled the best graphic enhancing mods and went with that. It was awhile ago so I'm not sure if anything newer is out. The mods I did use made it look incredible. I'm not into having light sabers and batmobiles in Skyrim.

I used to follow Gopher's videos to choose which mods I wanted. But after 70+ something videos, you'd have to spend 2 days going thru and picking them out.

My most recent install, I went to RealENB, and the dev put in a list of some pretty great graphics mods so I went ahead and went with that list, ontop of all my equipment mods and gameplay mods.

Really look into SkyRe, it makes the game much tougher. And only play on Master!

This is definitely frustrating. Mods do not seem to be working. I cannot seem to get anything added to the game without some failure in an hour of playtime. Literally spent the last day concentrating on it.

    Using:
    Nexus Mod Manager
    Loot
    Tes5Edit
    Skyrim(SKSE)

Tried a complete clean install of the game and removed all the mods and added them back one by one. To no avail sadly.

Use Mod Organizer; it is superior to NXMM. For a start to modding, begin at the STEP Wiki (http://wiki.step-project.com/Main_Page). Skyrim GEMS (http://skyrimgems.com/) is also a good place to browse mods that have received high endorsements and are typically vetted to not break things, just be sure to check comments out a bit and understand what kind of mod you're putting in. Requiem is my favorite overhaul, but it changes so much that you need to know how to use TES5Edit to really manually fix conflicts if you want to use a ton of mods.

The best stability test that I've found was recommended by the author of Skyrim Flora Overhaul. That is, after you get all your mods in, just start the game, turn on noclip and boost character speed to 1500, then run around and see if anything crashes. You can skip new game and go straight into the base game without any quests triggered by typing 'coc whiterun' at the title screen to make this process a bit faster.

This is probably a good place to start. http://www.tesgeneral.com/#!skyrim-guide/c22o0

I actually need to finally play skyrim myself. I played morrowind to death, but the thought of going through the learning curve to mod up skyrim has kept me from ever playing it. Maybe it's not as bad as morrowind was to get modded up.... hopefully.

Morrowind was much more annoying. More issues with conflicts, less things to fix them.

Still working on it, seem to be getting by, little by little.

Due to being sick this past week, progress and patience is low.

Found these to be useful for the laymen.

The organizer of all your mods
    http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/1334/?

TES5Edit is to auto edit your mods. Along with videos on how to properly install it.
    http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/25859/?

Loot is to organize your Mods
    https://loot.github.io/

Skyrim Nexus is to download the mods

    http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/?

Will update as i get used to it. Currently have everything working.

I think someone echoed it here but DO NOT use nexus mod manager, that thing is absolute shit. Use Mod Organizer. Here's a link with a ton of helpful hints.

    http://www.tesgeneral.com/

also there are some other sites that are not so NSFW but usually are good for finding some nice mods, and store a lot of the mods nexus banned because drama reasons. like SG hairs and Morten hair.
