Moving, so time to splurge on new tech!

Taking that big step and moving in with the girlfriend, and I'm taking the chance to splurge on new tech. I'm looking to get a new router, a soundbar/sound system for the tv, and maybe move into the 21st century and get a dual monitor setup for the computer.

I really didn't want to deal with satellite speakers for a 5.1 setup, at least not until we buy a home, so I decided to settle on a good soundbar. Any one have suggestions or comments? Likewise, for computer monitors, any one know of any good deals or specs I should be looking for? Also, routers seem to be one of those things that spending a little extra money on might be better in the long run. Any one have any favorites or suggestions for things to look for? Likewise, any other things you might want to suggest for moving into a new home and setting it up would be greatly appreciated.

I was looking into soundbars for awhile, but ultimately decided on a couple of Definitive Tech. floorstanding speakers, so I could expand later down the line after a move. The plan is to transition these into rear surrounds. Not exactly the answer you were looking for, but thought it might be worth mentioning as an option.

If you are looking game above 1080p, you can't go wrong with a Dell Ultrasharp. I used a 30" @ 2560x1600 resolution for a long time. I've transitioned to their 24" Ultrasharp (have ran 4-6 of them). Great monitors. Have also heard good things about BenQ's stuff, but haven't had the opportunity to try them myself yet.

Once you own a home, wiring rooms with cat6 would both add value to your house, and give you crazy fast speeds. Cat6 won't be replaced any time soon (if ever in residential situations), so your house would be future proofed. Of course you would have to have a switch (and possibly a patch panel). Helped a friend wire his house. Lots of work... but every bedroom/office/livingroom has 4 cat6 ports, no lag when gaming, no lag when streaming. No worries about keeping his network "secure".

Running one rg6 is still good practice imo. Cable is cheap and providers won't be abandoning it anytime soon. If anyone will have tenants or different owners, they will still want it to be there.

Though OP sounds more as moving into apt with girl for the first time and leaving his parents/bros/roommates/etc if he's gotta buy a new router.

Yeah, first time moving in with another person outside of the roommate thing. The owners are older, and I don't want to spend the money wiring their home but if all goes well I'll hopefully get a mortgage within the next two years and will definitely be doing that.

I've always been a fan of getting a decent receiver and good set of front speakers instead of a soundbar. It costs more, but each component is fully upgrade-able instead of having to replace an entire system.

I've got kind of a budget surround system, but I still love it. I started with a pair of Polk Monitor 60s ($200/pair) and a Polk CS2 center speaker ($150) back in 2009, then upgraded the fronts to Polk Monitor 70s in 2012 ($350/pair) and moved the 60s to the rear speakers.

I love soundbars for smaller spaces like apartment living that we have now. However once we get a house that I anticipate will have a much larger living room space as a home theater I can't imagine not going with a receiver and speakers. We got a Panasonic soundbar from my father in law about 4 years ago at Christmas and it's been awesome.

I sincerely contemplated going 2.1 with a decent receiver, but I really wanted to upgrade the computer and get dual monitors along with it. I figured for a quarter of the cost I can get a sound bar and just upgrade to the latest thing when I get a mortgage.
