And I posit, that if you had to spend 4-8 hours in a zone just for the chance at the access to 1% drops, then that system is fundamentally flawed. If you quite literally have nothing better to do, like say a college final, them by all means. I'm gonna be over where with my gear that is 97% just as good with more time in my pocket to oh idk...do anything other than spend a work day in an empty zone waiting to hit what is actually a lottery

    Psssst

That was everyone else point since the moment they realized abjuration gear from that first expansion was still as highly relevant as it was when the content for it was such ass.

To some degree, you're valuing competition more than cooperation. You're okay with the tribalism. I worry more about the species. It's almost like nationalism vs. globalism if you want to draw a political parallel. Sports can also be competitive without being directly head-to-head.

Can't lie, I almost called it quits late ToAU because I hated the merit scene and had more or less done everything I wanted of the old content. Campaign coming with WotG was one of those things that actually helped keep me interested because it was more about cooperation to keep/claim zones than zero sum competition. On top of providing an okay EXP/merit trickle without the need for cookie cutter merit parties and clear camps, it also left the door open for more interesting job combinations or taking advantage of lesser-used abilities within a given job's skill set. Unfortunately, that system wasn't perfect, either, and the eventual northlands iterations were garbage. Things being more like conquest with the weekly tally was one of the more glaring flaws. Some NM generals were bullshit. They could've done a lot more with the Campaign WS, as well as fleshing out the missing types. Alas, things dragged. I could see nuggets of Campaign's concept in other games as I poked around, but in playing some like GW2, it still wasn't the same.

And really, part of my rationale is playing a lot of other games besides XI. I've seen things that worked and things that didn't. Some things that wouldn't convert, while others could with some tweaks. I don't attribute popularity as a bad thing, just as I don't automatically believe uniqueness a strength. The devil is in the details, and I would argue one of the primary reasons why the genre has grown so stale is that the same 10-15% of hardcore players that hop from game to game are so vehemently unwilling to abandon the concept of raids, kings, or whatever "large scale difficult content" defines a particular title's endgame and their pursuit of personal prestige. By all means, have your own personal standards, just don't be surprised if others don't share them or color them with other flowery prose. Further so, the more we encourage singular titles to suck up 8+ hours a day, the more difficult it becomes to actually broaden your gaming horizons and see things from the different perspectives people may bring up. If content is to be exclusionary, it needs to be because someone's skill is lacking. At the same time, it also can't be the perpetual focus of development in titles that do receive routine updates because everyone else needs Things To Do(tm) that are worth doing, too.

It's kind of crazy how literal this quote is, as it directly translates to the linkpearl colors. If this was your intent... bravo.

oh, shut up. it didn't matter then, it sure as shit doesn't matter now.

the game has always been a never-ending sequence of upgrades. you want A but if you can't get that you use B, if you can't get that C isn't bad, if you can't get that D is a step in the right direction.

It wasn't upgrades tho. It was marginal at best sidegrades or purely situational gear up until SE dared to push it to the limit and introduce proper gear progression.

    Which apparently ruined the game.

course i did. even before i was informed of windower's existence, i had macros set up to swap my whole set.

people don't get handed perfect gear upon character creation. using sub-par gear until you can get yourself geared up is necessary and anyone who says they didn't is a fucking idiot.
