Also are there still places to get better .dats and the map pack with all the important stuff highlighted?

On another note, Trusts are excellent, I can't wait to be able to get 5 at once.
Yes get the 117 stuff for now. Sorry I missed you last night. Get as much RoV stuff done too for all the perks you get. It's not that bad. And getting some reforged RF/AF +1 won't be terrible either. I'll for sure be on all day Sunday if you want to pal around.

They've made this game so easy to get started with that it's actually hard for me to adjust, hot damn.

But I imagine WoW will finally put this "classic" fad to rest when it releases and flops because the good ol' days really weren't that great. It's already more or less killed Rift entirely because the devs couldn't juggle management for two modes.
WoW's had a booming private server scene for years now. This classic WoW launch probably wouldn't be happening if not for how well the private servers were doing. Hell, every year or so a new vanilla server popped up, with 12k people dropping their previous characters to literally do the same thing over again. The difference between classic WoW vs FFXI is previous versions of WoW are drastically better than live - which isn't the case for FFXI. If anything I think WoW Classic is going to open the floodgates for people begging for more legacy servers.

Being able to unity warp to Behemoth’s Dominion right next to the KB spawn is pretty clutch these days.

SE did, at one point, bump the higher tier Peacekeeper's Coalition weapons/gear to i119, and reduced the cost significantly (needs Bayld, but you can get all you'd need by taking a few minutes to run some coalition assignments). It's still not awesome, just sayin', sparks are not your only option prior to reforges/Ambuscade/etc.

People aren't hurting for money, I'm saying there are better ways to spend your time once money is involved. Private servers only really get a population because they're free nostalgia trips, so any time spent on them is a net gain. Spending an entire month camping HNMs and getting jack shit for $13 is a terrible investment no matter how you look at it- we only put up with it since we were young/had free time. In your case, you'll be paying $39 a month just to watch the guy 18-boxing with NASA2018, because we KNOW there's going to be someone 18-boxing with bots if classic servers become a reality.

Can't speak for how up to date, bug free, and accurate WoW's private servers are, but I'll simply remark that being free is still a factor while WoW itself saw over 20x XI's popularity in the past, and honestly probably even greater now despite the game's own aging decline. So, a higher interest doesn't surprise me, but at that same time, classic enthusiasts give that air it would suddenly draw millions back. Scale down to XI numbers and it's still the same story.

And if there is one thing I've encountered across various games and communities is that some folks have a very irrational hatred of JRPGs. That, alone, kept some from XI, while WoW being both western and having RTS roots gave those same haters a pass. And yeah, the sub fee mattered, too. Couldn't get 2 RL friends to play for that reason alone.

I remember in all my time I got ONE friend to sub to the game to try it and they quit after level 10, and that was in the old days. It really is just a niche game, will never be an E-sport thats for sure lol.

The 75 cap thing is just alien to me. I played through every era of the game and I can't imagine why anyone would choose that era as being the best. Even Abyssea had more competition in a fun way than 75 era HNMs etc. Standing in a single spot spamming bots was just so dumb. The most fun I've ever had with the game with during Delve time, really enjoyed it. I don't miss the old style leveling one bit, I even had a maats cap and I remember all the exp camps and I wouldn't go back. All the adjustments they've added to the game that I've dreamed of when I was a little brat. Having your favorite NPCs fight with you (except Raubahn, because no BLU's) and being able to rechallenge story bcnms with new rewards and difficulty, etc. They added so much to the game I have no idea how anyone could conceivably want to go back to lv75 and sit hours lfg, hours smacking colibri, sitting in one spot camping HNMs. It just makes literally no sense.

I bought the PS2 HDD and figured I'd give it a shot. Having not played any other MMO's I had no frame of reference for how unforgiving starting out was lol

Old style of leveling I enjoyed quite a bit, it was fun choosing different zones, party configurations, making new friends and all that. Camping for Kings, DI, SW - all of that was a nightmare and you couldn't pay me to do it again. The games progressed nicely over the years, and aside from absolutely needing a maxed REMA weapon to even think about playing a job competitively, I've got no complaints

Pretty similar to some of the Limbus zones to be honest. You enter and fight your way past fodder mobs and kill 5 mid-bosses and then at the end theres a mega boss all with varying mechanics. Limbus was my favorite 75 content as well.

I quit in 75 era, without honestly doing much more than sky and a few kings, just came back last week on a fresh character and I have to totally agree with this. All the changes I thought I would hate, Trusts etc, I actually love and theres probably no way I'd play this game if it was like it was at 75 cap now, and I'm someone that actually has the time to no life it since I work from home. Another week and I will probably be fully caught up to where my old character was, it's crazy how much it's gone towards solo RPG for what seems like most of the game but I love it actually. I can hardly imagine a fresh player playing the game today like it is now, let alone like it was at 75 cap, kids just aint about it. IMO of course.

Update if it keeps your interest... I've been debating it but don't think I could get my old char and a new char seems overwhelming

The fact that you can essentially play it solo now, if I have that right, would be a game-changer for me

You can level all the way up and do pretty much all the missions solo, Trusts are just like calling out a full party, there are soo many QoL changes that are so nice, can warp all over the place, mounts, mucho free inventory, all kinds of things. I thought it would be really overwhelming, but I started 8 days ago and have a 75 thf, 50 brd, and various other stuff leveled, all mostly done solo, joined Odon and Toki for a few XP sessions. XP is crazy faster now too. I'll update later for sure but I"m having a good time at the moment no doubt.

I also quit a little after WotG and pretty much agree with what Day said. I've been back off and on since the last free login campaign (in May I believe), and it's been a lot of fun. And yeah, almost everything is soloable now except for the current endgame stuff, and even that is somewhat soloable but you just get slower/less rewards.

Basically, outside of a few events, a lot of the endgame stuff allows you to choose the difficulty of the fight which determines the item level that the fight recommends. Lower difficulty gets less rewards with worse drop rates but can solo/duo with trusts, while higher requires a team of well geared players for better results in drops/rewards.
