The linkshell website is different from the SE account management website which is also used for XIV.

If you didn't convert your POL IDs over to the account management site, you'd have to convert and then you'd login to the website and see the status of your accounts.

Either way I'd say it's worth a try.

To be honest, I don't think I did, but then again, I don't remember. I guess it wouldn't hurt to look. I just hope it doesn't want old CC info, I definitely don't have that shit.

Okay, I'm on the website and none of this looks even remotely familiar, so it's safe to say I haven't done it before.

When I came back to XI a few years ago on a second account, I remember trying to do something similar to get my original account back and was told it's pretty much 0% chance to get a ban lifted. I remember someone on BG said you have to go pretty high up the chain beyond the first line customer service rep.

I remember when I noticed the ban I had already quit, I was just logging in to give some shit to a friend. I didn't bother to call SE and see whether or not it was perma, because I figured I had already quit so it didn't matter.

Now I'm trying to reset my password and see, but I can't find my security token. I know I wouldn't have thrown it out, so it's around here somewhere. I have to leave for class soon though, but honestly my hopes aren't that high. If I can get my old character back then great, but if not, fuck it. Then I'll at least know for sure.

The early game is what I miss the most... The endgame shell I was in was mediocre at best, but I started it with friends and basically had no interest in going elsewhere.

I'm thankful that I always treated it like a game and not as a real-world-simulator. I met a lot of cool people in the game, but ultimately they were always just in-game people to me and as I drifted away I just kind of forgot about them. I don't think any of them are around anymore, but if Godslayer, Kabukajeo, or Bremen ever google-fu their old names and come across this - sup bros.

I get the itch to play again every once and awhile, especially when reading threads like this, but when I step back and think about what FFXI was and what it is now I really see no need to come back. I'm just hoping someday there will be another AAA hardcore MMO that gives the same kind of feels.

there is no going back; you can't recapture the magic. you can try, but it won't be the same because so much of what made it magic was the newness. it was a unique experience, and cannot be repeated. you could revisit - maybe log in on a friend's high-level account, troll around Aht Urgahn, enjoy the memories - but if you tried to repeat the experience, it wouldn't work. who you are now is not who you were then. plus so much about the game has changed. I miss the days of suicide-level frustration over freaking NMs and drops and the way Squenix made it clear that they fucking hated us, the way we all existed in some sort of strange Stockholm-syndromesque state of coexistence with our hateful Japanese overlords. I really do miss all of that. I miss spending hours upon hours creating mules, sneak/invising my teleport quests, and selling the scrolls so I could afford HQ staves.

but you can't go back. not really. you could revisit FFXI, and you could even enjoy it, but it wouldn't be what it was. enjoy the memories, and the warm fuzzy feelings that accompany them, and know that your life is moving forward, ever onward, inexorably... until you die.

edit: all of that said... I wish XIV's gear system was more like XI's. sideways progression is so much more fun and interesting than vertical progression. I had to work my ass off to understand the right gear for my job, hell even the right gear for different functions within my job. XIV is basically "main stat > crit > other stuff," which is kinda sad. well at least for my job. there is no debate over ACC vs haste, there is very little parsing of one piece of gear over the other, etc. probably my biggest gripe about XIV so far... such poor gear variety, and so little reason to explore potential setups.

as far as the frustration goes... I miss the way it felt when I finally earned some shit, but I sure as hell don't miss the hours (days, weeks) leading up to it.

Returning to FFXI post-Abyssea was pretty depressing, even though I had a few people left on friends list (shoutout to Myangel!) who helped me get up to speed with a new LS. Tossing out all that hard-earned low-level gear at the start was a bitch. I did have fun getting the two solo-friendly jobs to cap, THF and BST, which probably made my return a bit more satisfying, soloing NMs and whatnot. Farming Dienamis in a duo/trio to complete the relic I never got was a drag, so I left again with no shiny lol

Wait, you can duo Dynamis for relics now?? Urge to go back rising.....

For those who still play, one of the biggest draws for me would be the story of SoA (and eventually the wrap up stuff that's still coming). How easy is it to do the missions? I think I quit after the first level cap increase (and don't think I even got all my jobs to 80..), so am I going to need to cap everything, get new gear, and then find people who also need the missions?

I think it was Wyred that was Fei Wongs arch nemesis and kept a website going with all the characters that he was buying or using lol, I remember reading the so called "legal action" Fei Wong was bringing against Wyred, don't know how much truth their was to it, but was always good for a laugh

SOA's missions were easy, but I cannot recommend the story. You could probably catch up to speed and finish the missions in a month, so it would really only cost you 12.95 to find out for yourself.

Yeah, relic weapons are 100% soloable now. If you are dedicated to making money everyday (dynamis, salvage, whatever), can make one in <1 month.

Going THF/DNC in CoP dynamis the most I've been able to clear solo is like 170. And that's with proc on 95% of stuff, no deaths, killing immediately after proc, etc. I don't know how people are getting that number solo, unless you are including lucky 100 piece drops from NMs.
