Yeah, I try to be reasonably friendly in XIV but when 90% of the people I meet aren't even on the same server, kinda hard to give a fuck about who they are. Never gonna see 'em again, why bother?

that's one thing i miss about XI. your server was an actual community. I knew/recognized loads of people from Fairy. We all had reputations. XIV... most people, even on the same server, are just more nameless randoms i'm never going to see again after whatever we're doing is finished.

I *think* it's from the Curio moogle in the 3 nations, can get a KI that lets you auto win or skip the Teodor thing.
I found out about it long after I was done with SoA and a buddy of mine was like "I won without even having to play him!" and rage ensued. LOL

Yup just did this last night. Failed once, raged on TS only to have a buddy tell me of the key item. It's the last list the moggle sells.

FFXI event in XIV, discussion brought this up, thought I'd post it here, too.



XI event really dragged up some hard-core nostalgia, even though I don't know the character. Iroha. Apparently your character in XI retires and trains a student (Iroha) who gets sent back in time to train under you at your prime and get a head start on saving the world or something. Event makes a few references like "fledgling adventurers who would fight crabs like these to better themselves" and "I could do this for days, even weeks at a time!" that made me chuckle.

I thoroughly enjoyed FFXI for most of the time that I played it, but with hindsight, I feel like the amount of time I put into it wasn't worth the payoff. I started playing in 2004 when I was 13. I became addicted to FFXI, and would often stay up all night playing it. I would guess that a lot of you guys did as well. I played it religiously for over 6 years. I usually played at least 10 hours a day, every day, and very rarely went longer than a day without logging in during those 6 years. I just feel that I don't have much to show for all the time I put in, except for screenshots and fading memories. I had tons of friends in game, but none of those friendships lasted after I quit playing. I still listen to the soundtrack every once in a while when I feel nostalgic.

Also, I've never actually met anyone in real life who has played FFXI. I've mentioned it to people through the years, but everyone I've met has either only played WoW or hasn't played any MMOs. It was huge in NA and Japan, but for some reason wasn't as popular in Europe. It feels weird that I've never discussed FFXI in detail with anyone in RL who has played it, or even met anyone who has played it.

I truly believe that time you enjoyed was not time wasted. No, maybe you don't have anything to necessarily "show" for it, but if you enjoyed yourself then the memories are just as important as any memories you might have made going out with friends, joining a sports team, or a club, or anything else.

Plus, XI offered a surprising amount of "real-world" experience in dealing with people. I learned a lot of skills that I still make regular use of from my time in XI.

Yeah, I used to be torn between my hardcore years from NA launch till like mid 2006, that I didn't go out to clubs or bars with my coworkers; choosing the safer environment was the healthier choice in this case, to me. Lots of my peers lived life like a shallow, chaotic, and fruitless gamble. I was always an introvert anyways, so I'd much rather accept that and stay true to myself, don't worry about what others think is "normal". I function normally around people, apart from being more reserved, so my years spent staying in with the fam, playing FFXI, instead of going out and meeting new "friends" didn't have any negative impact in my eyes.

I play a lot less videogames in general now, but if there was an MMO worth a shit, I'd probably still put in 4-5hrs a day lol

As much time as I "wasted" on this game, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Random friends from across the world, picking up bits of 4-5 different languages, moments on ventrilo/TS at 2-3am. You can't replace that and I wouldn't want to. I still hop on ts and text several people from the game.

I still remember leveling monk and camping for brown belt items. I had a ls mate camp that stupid tiger with me literally all night just to help me out, he got nothing from it. It got around to 7am and my college roommate asked if I had slept at all. That's the kind of time and dedication people put into the game. That's not necessarily healthy, but the friendships it created are something I've not seen in any other mmo.

I don't play anymore, but I still look back at the time fondly, despite all the bullshit drop rates and claim drama.

Speaking of real world application. I ran a dynamis and hnmls. I used to do party set ups and job call outs for all members when hnms would pop or were gathering for events. I'm a teacher now and grouping students and making seating charts is kind of fun for me. Reminds me of those days.

Tempted to play again to see how it all unfolds, but wow that would be a hell of a climb to accomplish all over again.

But yeah, the thought of this being the end of the story is an extremely surreal experience. Despite the shit I gave the game in my KI days, I still loved the story.

eh. FFXI has a pretty high barrier to entry for me: i am not going through all that bullshit of installing it and getting it working and writing new macros (or getting windower running)

plus at this point im content to just rest on my laurels. i haven't done half the content, now. i quit partway trhough the insanely sluggish WotG expansion, and only vaguely remember the stuff I did do.

Honestly, writing an entirely new spellcast xml after having quit is enough of a deterrent for me. (I know it's not spellcast anymore but still, I'm assuming it works roughly the same way.)
