The "real" vana'diel ended in Ruin and Altana cried, from those tears Caith Siths were born who then activated Atomos and created an alternate Vana'diel where the crystal war didn't end as in the original Vana'diel.
Or... something like that.
JP people hardly get it right when they start messing up with time travels and timelines To be fair hardly any writer manages to, for my tastes, regardless of the country he's from.

Concerning Draylo's question on the Gates of Paradise

There's a big discussion that I opened many years ago about FFXI's plot holes etc. One of the things discussed was exactely that. What are "the gates of paradise", behind all the metaphors it gets used with?
Opening the gates of paradise shouldn't be seen as a literal portal to another dimension, the "real" vana'diel.
It's more a metaphor for a process that would merge together once again the 5 crystals into the mothercrystal.
Doing that would destroy vana'diel (and the universe?) and all the races of vana'diel etc. The final result would be the "world" (we can't really talk about a "world" here, but I can't find a more fitting word) where Altana and Promathia used to live.
The Zilartians wanted to achieve that, live together with her goddess in that "world".
I seem to recall it was something like that at least...

it was WotG. Lilith's future is the true future, but as evidenced through the games history there are many parallel universes. Like Abyssea, the Vanadiel that D/B shantotto came from, and Italian abyssea

Regarding the Cloud, yes. It is. The avatar of the Void that desires to consume all things, just attempting to chew up a different world this time. Incidentally, it also allows for every single FF to exist as their own islands in the void and even theoretically ties Dissidia into the whole.

Anyone stuck on "An Unending Song"? I went step by step and can't seem to get #27-Home Nation Cutscene. I have the KI for beating the BC (26) and got the cut scene but no matter what I do I can't get a CS when I zone into a home nation.

probably, or not. after she did cut her hair before doing it. and her hair is normal here.. but i guess that would have been a spoiler..

also i feel theres a slight metaphor in the fact that she couldn't leave Eorzea when she tried.

The way she walked off at the end makes me think they're planning for more with her. Also, her hair was red at the time, too (when she left Vana'diel, I mean, not Eorzea).

Is that the one where you get Cipher: Iroha? Because my inventory was full and I couldn't obtain it, I could only progress to the next mission after going to the mystical whatever in the crystal chamber and obtaining the cipher.

Please tell me "Phoenix's Blessing" KI allows auto-reraise everywhere. Otherwise it's kinda disappointing. Either way, it's a lovely conclusion to the game, very touching.

The 5 women helping you along the way, can be interpreted as 5 chakras helping you achieve Nirvana. Also, not to sound crude but the entry to Sanctorum looks like woman's legs and vagina, while the "mother"crystal is the Vana'diel equivalent to a woman's egg, from which all life is born. Just a thought.

You got it after your fight in Des-Paradox with acended promathia I believe. I think it allows you to use the dimensional portal in empy-paradox to go to reisen or the crags as I was unable to do so before I got that KI
