American Ultra - Written by Max Landis

Beware as trailer shows entire story but idgaf about that

i know a lot of you sensitive little bitches will be all upset that this has jesse eisenberg and kristen stewart and even tho i don't have any love for Kstew I am a proud member of team eisenberg. plus eric forman and john leguizamo. I MEAN COME ON

regardless of all that shit, it is written by the gawd Max Landis so you know it will at least be somewhat entertaining. For those not familiar with Landis he made these two gems and wrote chronicle

I just saw this tonight since there was slim pickings this week. It turns out Hitman ended up being <10% on RT and American Ultra was 40%~ so I figured it'd be worth watching. I was pleasantly surprised. The plot could've been stronger, it's very weak in background and execution but Eisenberg pulls off some John Wick-style action. Overall the plot was solid but could've used a bit more love. There were a lot of one dimensional supporting characters that could've had better developed backstory.

It's like a mix between Pineapple Express and Smoking Aces (I'm sure there's a better movie to compare it to, but this is all I can think of) but without the emotional ending and colorful antagonists. It's one of those movies you'll watch once and never pick up again.

    Spoiler: show
Ultimately I think that if the movie started off with a better reason behind the whole event being insubordination it would've been a lot stronger. I would've liked to have seen Topher Grace's character and the project strongman characters built up and expanded a bit more. Not to mention extending the action scenes a bit more. All the good stuff happens the last quarter of the movie. I think these few changes would've made the plot a lot stronger, but it could've been a budget thing. They obviously don't intend to turn this into a series, much more just a one off thing.

I didn't really see what was supposed to hook people? Hey, look Jesse Eisenberg is a spy doing goofy shit. Hey, it's the chick from Twilight. Hey, it's Topher Grace acting as Eric Forman as a CIA agent.

    Yeah, no.

I'll be seeing it next week. Despite the mediocre to negative reviews a majority of positive reviews come from trusted sources, I'd rather take AV Club's word than Willie Waffles. plus stoner action comedies really do it for me.

Haha man I just saw this and it was pretty enjoyable. It's basically Adventureland v2.0 with a shitload of violence. Plenty of weak points in the plot, but the Stewart / Eisenberg love story is decent; reminds me of True Romance to a certain extent. I think it's worth a cheap matinee ticket at least. Only significant complaint was its length; it's like 1:20 all-in.

    PS: Get baked before viewing
