This is a very weird ban to do. If it's based on content, then why are super racist/sexist/violent/extremely fucked up subs still around. If it's based on behavior/brigading then why is stuff like SRS still around.

If I were to wager a guess, the fatpeoplehate sub is probably gaining a reputation for harassment against individuals, where as maybe the racist subs are just broadly being racist against no one person in particular.

I don't use reddit, so I don't know for certain.

My height is probably my biggest physical flaw (5'6"). While I would find a subreddit about "whiteguyhate" or "shortguysareajoke" offensive, I wouldn't be upset.

But if I found my Facebook or OKCupid or whatever picture plastered all over reddit because "haha, this guy is so short, it's pathetic - he should kill himself" - I'd be quite upset. I think maybe that sort of thing is going on in the fat-hate sub-reddits.

I get what you're saying and I 100% agree with you. But, if an individual wants to post pictures of themselves online they should be aware that others can save that picture and use at a later time. I'm not condoning it, but that's the world we live in now. And just so we get it out of the way, yes I understand there are those that do not use social media or anything else and are in a buddies picture that gets used online. It sucks, it really does, but it is what it is.

I don't know if they did harassment (some say they did others say that didn't) since I don't go there. But let's say they harassed people. Ok. I totally get that. That is 100% a legit reason to close a sub down. However there are much much much worse subs out there that do this (Shitredditsays) that goes as far as doxxing people and getting people fired from their jobs. That sub is literally 100% harassment. But because the admins of the site mod there, it will never go down. That is the problem.

If harassment of the imgur staff like has been mentioned was happening, shutting down fatpeoplehate makes sense. At least until you hit the current situation of it just leaking all over reddit and shitting up the place. Unfortunately reddit lost the ability to defend itself on the grounds of that specific subreddit being a problem when it started targeting other sections.

The company is also opening up a big can of worms on itself as well. In prior situations where bad shit from reddit may have bubbled up to the mainstream media they were able to use the defense of how they generally leave each subreddit under it's own control/free speech/etc. Targetting and shutting down specific groups while leaving all kinds of racist or other generally awful subreddits alive and well they aren't able to use that defense anymore, at least until they go full SJW on the entire website.

So why not just.. remove the image. Or the mods. Its your site you can change what you want. Deleting the entire subreddit and then any new ones that come up (with no staff picture) sounds like a vendetta and not a behavior issue.

It being a perfectly acceptable reaction is still way up for debate. I have not seen them encouraging people to harass people outside of reddit, unless you're going to say that using imgur (which everyone on reddit uses primarily) to host pics making fun of imgur staff, using photos the imgur staff have posted themselves on imgur, is somehow harassment. That seems pretty ridiculous to me.

I don't actually know what's owned by what, but if a VC gets involved with large sums of money they usually make sure they have a lot of legal leg to stand on to make decisions - and of course they're going to be more persuasive than you. So, regardless of who "owns" reddit (they'd have the private equity seperated between people/groups) the VC guys who put 50m in have some nontrivial % of that. Anyway, they can then have enough influence to strategically create an environment where the #1 decision for everyone is to go public after blowing themselves up with a lot of hot air and the VCs just liquidate their shit (scummy) or the #1 decision is to sell to a larger entity, like fb (less scummy)

It's not impossible that this is what's happening, and it makes a hell of a lot more interesting for me so i'm all aboard this hype train

I genuinely enjoy reddit and none of my 50 subs are in any sort of danger of being banned and chances are the people that post in those subs are not the same as those fleeing to voat. my front page doesn't have a single thread about this drama so i'm good to go.
