I'm pretty sure that's what real people are bothered about.

As a palate cleanser, you could investigate the #distractinglysexy thread on twitter.

nah even if it was all taken down and there was 0 room for hypocrisy you'd see a shitstorm because this new ceo is literally changing what reddit's stood for. Albeit it wouldn't be as funny because now fat hate is synonymous with free speech which makes it 100x more funny

Here's what reddit used to stand for: Yishan Wong, the site's former CEO, has stated that "We stand for free speech. This means we are not going to ban distasteful subreddits. We will not ban legal content even if we find it odious or if we personally condemn it." and that was true of everyone in charge of reddit since it was founded when it came to media criticizing them for allowing racist/sexist/etc shit on there. Everyone's been in support of an open and free internet... on the day FPH was hate ellen pao came out and announced:

"It's not our site's goal to be a completely free-speech platform. We want to be a safe platform" Which is spitting in the face of what reddit's been this whole time AND is (ironically) exactly the same kind of meddling that made digg (reddit v1.0) lose all of its user base and go to reddit years ago

    It's about ethics in forum moderation ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) srsly

I agree with most of your points, and that probably will all happen regardless, but there seriously would have been significantly less backlash if SRS ate shit and got nuked from orbit. But the issue is all the admins are mods on SRS which gives them circle of protection and pissed most people off.

ya, edited before even seeing your post.

It'd be a LOT LESS funny/"viral" because now free speech is synonymous with fat people hate. You can't get funnier than that

Edit: also Ellen Pao being a total scumbag liar married to an even bigger scumbag help the virality of this all too. But probably anyone who screws up so badly at misunderstanding the body they're CEO of probably has a lot of shit under the bed to laugh at anyway

This is the case. It is a problem where the solution does not scale anywhere near as well as the problem itself. And if you try to use the open model of combating it, well, you just get the same problems as managing a wiki.

I think the bigger issue this highlights is how many "qualified" CEOs really don't know anything about the companies they are heading.

I'm not sure if this is a condescending reply or if it's something that's flying over my head (it probably is). I'm not a reddit user either and never will be. I attempted and realized quickly how it's a cesspool for trolls and the like. Had an issue on the buy/sell pc parts reddit (person in the wrong tried blaming me and got destroyed by the people that read the thread) and the mods were like "oh well deal with it".

BG is just about my only internet socializing site. I recognize I get too emotional/angry/annoyed by the majority of what's out there online because most forums (or any site where comments are allowed) are nothing greater than a place for people to use it as their personal soapbox for whatever their cause is that day. I can enjoy BG and the forums here. Anything else I'd rather channel my energy to furthering my personal life. Again, this is for me. Not saying this is how it should be for everyone.

    We know at least 1!

And this has really been the highlight of the enjoyment factor for me. Reddit's huge, 170 million UNIQUE users a month. That's over 1/10 of FB at its peak. Fucking this up is going to down into the history books for sure.

Not sure if anyone brought it up, but Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks once did an AmA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit and one user asked his opinion on censorship on Reddit, around the time of GamerGate. Reddit apparently shadowbanned that user...

    http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/...30/935/c22.jpg

...after which Assange tweeted about said display of censorship as seen here.

I believe I read that mods (admins?) either tried to claim the user in question had been shadowbanned due to other reasons or by mistake. Which, I can't remember but it kinda shows that the people at Reddit are all for censoring ideas and inquiries that isn't to their liking. I'm not saying I support the shaming of the obese, those of a given race, those who are gay or trans, etc. in fact, I'm not all that fond of Reddit but Reddit advertised itself as a place where you could put your views out there and talk to others with similar views no matter how odd or inflammatory they may be. Reddit appears to be going through some sort of cleansing and it's kinda sad.

I only lurk Reddit because the hive mind is, quite frankly, pathetic. They hold karma to be sacred in a sense when all it is is just a fucking number. Reddit has some good content and by 'good' I mean the stuff that only I would search for...like severe necrosis or the genitals of an intersex individual who was willing to share but it's only a matter of time before someone decides to bitch about seeing gore and genitals. Reddit is a place my morbid curiosity is allowed to run wild, not looking forward to mass censorship.

Shadowbans, Phantombans, or Hellbans are a forum function that allows you to post and see your post but to everyone else and for all intents and purposes, you are banned without knowing you are banned; out of sight, out of mind.

The further I dig about this stuff there've been signs starting last year that admins have changed their policy with regards to banning

A while back there was a gawker article doxxing a moderator (Michael Brutsch) of creepshots subforum on reddit and this was the stance reddit had at the time: "Reddit CEO Yishan Wong defended the content Brutsch contributed to the site as free speech and criticized efforts to ban the Gawker link on the same basis.[18] Wong stated that the staff had considered a site-wide ban on the link, but rejected this idea for fear it would create a negative impression of the site without getting results." Which is night and day compared to reddit today

What's funny is there has never been such a big outrage for the julian assange thing, the fappening, gamergate bans, or any of the smaller things (they banned a woman vs man hate crime... and some other small things idr). Had they done this FPH thing right, I think Kuno's right in saying that this would be swept under the rug.

Wont find the comment now but someone made a funny meme out of this poem...
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
I think it's damn intriguing people are fighting back on having free speech and punishing privatized entities who deny it. Wish I was interested enough in this type of stuff when Digg went under doing similar stuff

The fun part is, even thought people are "standing up against it", nothing with come of it.

    Idk about that

Digg collapsed under similar conditions. VC meddling with how posts were shown, what was on top, being able to pay for more "votes", etc drove people away

Really looks like the same is happening with reddit. I doubt the people who are standing up will do much, Ellen Pao is speaking to the investors directly and can spin the outrage pretty easily so I agree with you there. But if reddit fundamentally changes how its run and how it functions... the user base will leave to the next "cool people" place like it did in 2010 with reddit

You better believe the next reddit is going to be at least ready for a shift, so it's all up to reddit to fuck things up further, and with this Ellen Pao chick at the helm trying to get out of all of her and her husband's retarded legal debts my money's on reddit's userbase being basically gone by 2017

Reddit staff will just do whatever the hell they want and there will be enough people unaffected that it won't really make much difference. Those who are undesirables in their eyes will just go elsewhere.

If they keep changing the way reddit is run the hardcore fans will be go elsewhere, you're right. But then what's left of reddit if all the people who do the majority of contributing are gone? Lurkers/fairweather users will just follow the crowd. It isn't reddit's staff that's made reddit so popular and awesome. It's the forum system, which is open-sourced, and the community. You don't piss off your user base when you're running on open source shit lol

Now I kind of hope they eventually fail because I want to be right about the fragility of a business like this. You don't go making big changes like this without doing split testing, heeding the warnings of your predecessors, or at the very least asking your user base what they think. It'll be a big lesson for anyone going into business, politics, or even marketing

Edit: if they keep making decisions that pave the way for big advertising and they DON'T fail then this'll be a great example of "too big to fail" and I don't much like that. Don't think anyone should like that

You should probably stop taking your dank meme aggregators so seriously.

lol, if you want to talk about dank memes, I'm all for good laughs

If you want to talk about business, politics, and success, you're going to have to take more seriously an open sourced website bringing in 170 million unique users a month. That's over 1/10th of facebook. This is the beginnings of a big deal, one way (reddit fails) or another (reddit succeeds despite of this)
