He's right on that point.
If public opinion about what the person is doing is in any way important, then explain why it doesn't apply in both cases. Which is to say, if people thinking Caitlyn Jenner is pretending doesn't matter... why does it matter that you think Rachel is?
I think its interesting that people are trying to spin this so hard not realizing that these kinds of rationalizations are extremely similar to the things people used to bring up about transgendered people back in the day. Give it time; you'll be eating crow.
There are plenty of things that were obviously irrational in the past that continue to be obviously irrational in the present
Wolf kid still cracks me up to this day.
I wonder if her favorite movie was Soul Man?
I do think its cool that the NAACP said she can keep her position. Unless that changed since I first read about this? If she feels better about herself as a black person, then what is wrong with her being happy? Kinda shitty that her family sold her out.
Great piece by Kareem on this.
http://time.com/3921404/rachel-dolez...-abdul-jabbar/What we use to determine race is really nothing more than some haphazard physical characteristics, cultural histories, and social conventions that distinguish one group from another. But, for the sake of communication, we will continue to misuse the word, myself included, in order to discuss our social issues so everyone understands them. As far as Dolezal is concerned, technically, since there is no such thing as race, she’s merely selected a cultural preference of which cultural group she most identifies with.
TL;DR: She identifies as black culturally (because that's the part of "race" that we can appropriate). Whether or not that representation is considered deceitful by others is ultimately irrelevant.
Oh. Okay. It's alright to lie to get ahead as long as you had good intentions.
No one gives a shit how she identifies, for the last time. It's not about that.
^
Her identity is her own and not the issue at hand. I have no issues with how she identifies.
Cant wait for transage to be the next big hit so i can hit on college freshman qt's guilt free.
Also because I have the mentality of a child.
Why? It is not at all an uncommon opinion in a lot of areas in the country. Hell, I get to listen to my neighbors laughing about "all the idiots catering to this loony dressing up like a chick." (near direct quote as I can remember from the drunken gripe-fest about a week ago) I would frankly guess that there are more people who think it's bogus than don't.
And if you get out of the US/Western Europe, I'll guarantee it.
I find myself pretending to be black when it's convenient, yet I'm still light skinned enough to claim a few European countries when in the presence of white folks. Then I just like to confuse everyone when I start speaking Spanish.
Just remember Betteridges law of headlines: If the headline ends in a question mark, the answer is always no.
Rachel Dolezal's weird shit does not mean we need to forget everything we thought we knew. She's not part of a larger issue here.
Just read that she sued Howard University in 2002 for... wait for it... discrimination against her due to her being white.
Just saw that on my facebook page. Here's a link if anyone wants to read it.

> Files a lawsuit basically alleging that her work in african studies wasn't being taken seriously because she was white
> Gets laughed at
> Pretends to be black
> Successful head of the NAACP chapter
