I think it's more the open-world of the older FF games gave the illusion of freedom to do whatever you wanted. In some cases you could explore the shit out of the map before continuing the story, but most of the time you were sectioned off by a tall mountain range you couldn't get around or a river or ocean or etc that forced you to progress a certain specific direction.

Where as 13 up until Gran Pulse was literal tunnels with no side quests or exploration or etc. Not to mention it played like a tutorial until Gran Pulse too and leveling was capped and abilities were capped and etc etc until then too. 10 you could kind of sort of explore and grind and carve your party out and etc. 12 was like that too.

I know SE is all about amazing graphics and blah blah with the FF series, but would anyone be really upset if say, towns/caves/dungeons/etc were done beautifully and the open world map that connected it all was more toned down? Made like chibi-World of FF style or something akin to that? Obviously the big problem with making those world maps now is just how taxing it is to actually create it and how graphically demanding it is. But that shit worked wonderfully in FF7, 8 and 9.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But didn't 13 like, not even have towns, or people to talk to or anything? Like, you were literally just stuck on a path, with 0 things to explore, you shop from the menu, and if you want extra lore, you also got that from the menu.

Yeah, but it fit with the context of the story. Bold choice but it didn't pay off, at least not the way they did it.

I think people complaining about linearity are mostly complaining about literal corridors as level design and nothing interesting to discover. Some areas are really nice, but it feels like you only really take part in like 15% of the world and nothing else.

Yeah, I was thinking more in the context of like, X vs XIII. Like, at least there were people to talk to and towns to walk around in in X, despite you being stuck on rails going from specific zone to specific zone. It gave the illusion of much more freedom than XIII.

I don't think XIII was a bad game, I just think it was very weak compared to most of the others.

Yes. Literal corridors. A literal street. Some literal military base hallway. You put me in a beautiful forest with one path forward but great atmosphere, I have no problem with that, and there was a bit of that, and I enjoyed many of those sections (Snow's icy corridor area, for one).

Hell, Darkest Dungeon is literally a game about walking in a straight line, and I love that. Its all in how you make the game around it. XIII had shit characters for most of the game, shit villians for most of the game, a shit overarching plot with 75% of its lore baked into text entries (Imagine how terrible FFVI would have been if instead of seeing plot points, you just read about them in some in-game log), and functioned as a giant, limiting tutorial until you unlocked gran pulse (which is where it became fun, admittedly).

I’m pretty sure I read an interview once about FF13 where the level designers and art designers weren’t even located in the same building. That’s why you had such a huge disconnect between the world it was trying to portray and it being rammed through literal corridors.

I haven't actually beaten XIII just because Pulse is so much fun.

Stop comparing the linear story in most FF games to the hallways in XIII their not even close. Untill Gran Pulse there was nothing you could do but go down the hallways nothing. The only games that come even close are 1-4 before you could really add a lot of stuff to the game because it was the NES and early days of the SNES and even those games aren't as linear as XIII and I becomes really non linear after you beat Lich.

Wasn't quite as restrictive but X caught lots of flack for not being true open-world.

The lack of a real airship being high on the list, although FFXII didn't have one either and it was fine.

Even in X, the hallways had branching paths that led to either treasure, hidden spheres, or people that added to the story. XIII had basically none of those things. I can barely remember talking to ANYONE in that game, and I don't really care if it was by story design. Even if the player character is in a rush, -I- still want to talk to people and learn more about the world. There's been "omg GTFO now!" scenes in every FF game, and they still made time to reward you for going out of your way to snoop around. Think of the Fire castle in FFV, the collapsing mansion in VI, ect.

XIII didn't even have a timer for this so-called "GOTTA GO FAST" plot decision. For all the talk of "we're fugitives and have to run run run!", not once was some enemy or pack of soldiers actually chasing after me to the extend that it was game over if they caught me. Hell, the one place I can remember where actual enemy soldiers came rushing at you, it turned out to be one hell of a great grinding spot with Snow and Hope, so I wound up farming those guys for hours (plus it was rocking Snow's theme as the battle music, which is really good).

Don't tell. Show. Don't tell me the world is out to get me if I so much as stop to talk to someone. Show it in the actual gameplay.

Is this confirmed for PC? Thread title makes it seem that way.

Kinda hoping. I want the best-looking and best-running version I can get, and that will never be on a console. Many japanese companies have been leaning in on PC/console releasing in unison, but SE still lags behind others (Capcom is doing a very good job lately). This is absolutely a day 1 buy, so I'm hoping I can get it on PC instead of the weak PS4.

There's no way this launches on PC. Please look forward to the PC version a year and half later because SE knows impatient morons will buy it twice

    This.

But also all we know right now is that it's "first on PS4"
