As long as they keep the overworld travel, chocobo breeding, all the summons and materia, the story and all side quests, I'm fine.

    ^ Overworld travel.

That's the big kicker (and part of why they didnt want to remake it too..and likely why Versus XIII ended up scrapped in the long run since it was said to have a traditional overworld too) unless they turn it into an open world environment.

So VII turning into an open world kinda setting will be..different.

The biggest argument against change I have is that if you want to change everything about Final Fantasy VII, it seems like you want a movie version and not a new game. The reason people are so fond of FF7 is because of what it was. It is rather surprising that anyone would be pro them going back through and mucking shit up. Changing character personalities, removing scenes, getting rid of Sailor Red, etc. So much of what people love about FF7 is tied up in all these little things. How much can you strip before it isn't FF7 anymore?

That doesn't mean you don't change anything other than the graphics. Update the battle system to be a more modernized version of the ATB (ala X-2), but don't turn it into an action RPG. Clean up the translation, but don't remove Barret and Cid's speech patterns. Add additional content to clarify things that have been introduced in the Compilation, but don't ram Genesis and Angela everywhere. Leave squats in the game. Change the one-off minigames (CPR, slapping) to be better, but don't turn them into cutscenes. Expand the "Help Mr. Mog Get Lucky" game.

There are a lot improvements you can make without stripping everything that makes it FF7. Sure, we can argue about remaster vs remake vs reboot vs reimagine and it certainly isn't up to us, but if SE is doing this because the fans asked for it, going off and making some new game with FF7's story slapped onto seems like a good way to get people angry.

100% agree with all of this. Exactly what I want from this game.

Sure, but maybe Cloud kept the dress and this is later in the game!

Story elements are always going to be hit or miss, maybe some elements just don't work in a fully rendered 3D environment with top-end graphics. FF7 has undeniable charm but I bet a lot of what makes it so charming would be drastically less so if it wasn't so stylized. So if you change nothing about them, would they work as well? Would you still like the event as much, or do you think new people would get it? Saying you want things to change doesn't mean you have to destroy everything that makes FF7 what it is, but changing it for a new generation, new hardware and new plot points. It's not like FF7:AC, CC and DoC have amazing plots, but I'm sure they could change stuff to make it gel better, remove stuff that doesn't make sense or is just bad and add new scenes to flesh out the story. They could even change pacing to make the game fresh for those who replayed it.

Literally nothing needs to stay the same and probably shouldn't, being familiar but up to date should be ideal. Pretty much the worse thing they could do is change mini-games into cut-scenes, since it did a lot to break up the monotony, but if there's a chance FF7 could be better than before, why not let it try?

Why would wanting change = wanting a movie? That makes no sense.

I just see no need to play the same game I beat years ago in an HD format. I don't expect a completely revamped story, but I expect a new experience. That would include pretty significant changes, and it at least seems like that's what they're interested in doing. Purists will never be happy though, but it's best if people like that just stick to playing the original - it's still a great game.
