Been reading the tweets of two reporters covering the case and it's a little more complicated than that. Apparently the victim went to the mother's house and changed shirts before going to the hospital. The nurses gave the mother the paper bag to go collect the shirt, but the police went to the house to get the shirt and place it in plastic evidence bags. So the mother had the paper bag which was never actually used in the investigation. It seems like she hoodwinked the family's attorney into the press conference where he claimed the bag was left on her front step, which is why the attorney removed himself from the case.

It's all just one giant clusterfuck.
