Yeah, me too. If this things like this continue to happen, it'll almost be as if companies may figure out that alienating your consumer base may have repercussions. On top of that, it'll give consumers the idea that they can actually affect change with companies by protesting them.

Reddit is different than most companies because it depends heavily on user activity, so they have to keep their ears to the ground and try to guess what the users will do. This time, they balked (probably unnecessarily).

A company that provides a service you directly pay for has less to worry about until their actual profit numbers start dropping.

Yeah it's been said before, reddit isn't like every other business in that they don't have a product OR service and their entire platform is open source

ALL they have is a user base

Still though, it's a great highlight of the world of CEOs.

People mistake CEOs as people who actually contribute heavily to the success of a company. In reality, they're just the top of the management chain these days. In addition, I'd expect very few to know anything remarkable about the "business" they're "running".

Pretty much, in any company of basically > 25 people the CEO's only real function is to be liaison to the board of directors and to be a tie-breaker. That's really all they do in day-to-day activities, they're about maintaining the direction of the organization, not actually running it, that's what the other C tier executives and their directors do.

The most important function of a CEO ultimately is to be the embodiment of the company culture and set cultural precedents. To her credit, Ellen Pao clearly understood this and acted very well in this manner, unfortunately the culture she was setting a precedent for was unwanted.

Not with that failed sexual harassment charged. I'd be shocked if she's CEO of another existing company by 2020.

This is true. Once you reach high enough in the corporate management ladder it doesn't matter what your accomplishments were or how well the company did as long as you don't get sent to jail you can move around from company to company. This goes for VP's and that level too. At my last corporate job we went through so many upper management types they would come in hang around for 4-5 months then be on to their next high paying job. They didn't even accomplish that much but as long as they held the title it seemed like that was enough to land another job.

Female* remember according to most news outlets Asians are white and have white privilege. A company compromised mostly of an even mix Chinese, White American, and Indian people is 85% white.

so the other day it came to light that it wasn't Pao who fired Victoria and now the new/former CEO has posted this

    Hey Everyone,

There has been a lot of discussion lately —on reddit, in the news, and here internally— about reddit’s policy on the more offensive and obscene content on our platform. Our top priority at reddit is to develop a comprehensive Content Policy and the tools to enforce it.

The overwhelming majority of content on reddit comes from wonderful, creative, funny, smart, and silly communities. That is what makes reddit great. There is also a dark side, communities whose purpose is reprehensible, and we don’t have any obligation to support them. And we also believe that some communities currently on the platform should not be here at all.

Neither Alexis nor I created reddit to be a bastion of free speech, but rather as a place where open and honest discussion can happen: These are very complicated issues, and we are putting a lot of thought into it. It’s something we’ve been thinking about for quite some time. We haven’t had the tools to enforce policy, but now we’re building those tools and reevaluating our policy.

We as a community need to decide together what our values are. To that end, I’ll be hosting an AMA on Thursday 1pm pst to present our current thinking to you, the community, and solicit your feedback.

PS - I won’t be able to hang out in comments right now. Still meeting everyone here!
wonder who the new scapegoat will be?

you gotta check out twitch chat every now and then. 90% of the money streamers make is from getting trolled with dollars

reddit would make a lot more money (imo) if it let everything be free speech and get the trolly scene into the show instead of trying to keep things "honest and open (◕‿◕✿)"

with him saying that I foresee the train continuing without pao, reddit's going down in the next 2 years boys

I'm pretty indifferent to this entire shit-show, but there are much more damming quotations than that one to use. That one specifically is speaking to what the Founding Fathers would think of reddit, not what either of its creators created it to be.

Alexis is the founder. He is saying it is a bastion of free speech, and that the founding fathers would love that.
