The license for Win8 is probably embedded in the BIOS. I encountered a similar problem with that on my new ASUS laptop, but I was able to fix it by reverting first to a clean install of Windows 8.1 using Microsoft's Installation Media Creation Tool and then forcing an upgrade via Windows Update. After Windows 10 is installed as an update, use the "Reset this PC" option under "System Settings" in the Start menu and the license should stick and you'll have a clean install. There will be a folder called 'Windows.old' on the root of the C:/ drive which will need to be removed using the disk cleanup utility, but it's a minor inconvenience at worst.

Well, fuck. That would be most irritating.
Going to call Dell and see if they can provide an help, otherwise, I guess I will have to do that ; ;
I upgraded my laptop the other day and had the same problem with it saying "Windows not activated" or w/e. I spammed the fuck out of the console command to force it to check, but had no luck with that. I eventually gave up on it, and I don't even have the windows 8.1 information from when I installed it to revert. I got the windows 8.1 through dreamspark at my old school so I'm not sure if that is what caused it. I'll just have to buy it eventually.
Ya, Dell basically told me that there would be issues clean-installing W10 on their systems (Bullshit, but whatever). They are sending me a W8.1 disc so that I can format with that then just upgrade with W10 (again).
Not like I'm going to format this laptop multiple times in the next couple of years, but it's still pretty annoying that they hardcode their serial numbers into the BIOS...
Well, according to MS their activation servers should remember your hardware after the upgrade, at least when you actually wait for w10 to activate itself. Once that's done you can re-format and install clean without activation trouble.
I really wonder how they'll handle this once the "free upgrade" campaign is over (in case they don't repeatedly extend it...)
What's the average wait time to get win 10? Reserved it for my surface pro 2 and it's been 10 days and still waiting.
Don't wait, force update
No idea, but the desktop at home has been waiting since the 29th. you can "force" it though: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...n-tool-install
(did that on a work laptop + one of the other computers).
edit: whoops, Gokulo beat me to it.
edit2: You can also do some messing with the predownloaded files (google it if you want) but the toolkit is a lot less complicated
How the hell do I use my One Note without having to sign in? Got a budget laptop here to manage some home/family stuff with and to leave it at family's, and I want to jot down some basic notes/password like Sticky Notes in Windows 7. Got told One Note replaces it, but everytime I launch it, it wants me to sign in, which I do not want to lol
The only thing minorly frustrating me is the large amount of Microsoft Account needed to do things. So far I managed to avoid most of it all; but this is boggling me.
Not sure if it'll apply to One Note, but on pro and up, you can under gpedit make using microsoft accounts voluntary (back in at least 8.x you needed to do this to run the mail app etc. on local accounts). If you have Office 2013/365, you should be able to set the desktop version of OneNote to standard, which'll be more lenient.
Oh balls I only have the "economy" version (whatever the most basic version is).
Wonder if I can just lift StickyNotes.exe from Windows 7 and paste it here hahaha...
Fine I'll find another solution.
So I found out that my FFXIV GW issue was with cortana, and I seem to be the only one with the problem. Like cortana is 'fucking' up with my computer Idle time.
GW idle timer is not able to go up when cortana is on, but if i end task + rename cortana folder to make sure she's 100% disable, the Idle timer works NP
But if i deactivate cortana that way the 'search windows' feature is deactivated
Anyone know what could the problem be?
Finding this to be pretty buggy atm. My surface keeps waking itself up randomly and shutting down randomly.
It won't run disc-based games that come with built-in DRM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zm70...tu.be&t=15m30sEverything that ran in Windows 7 should also run in Windows 10. There are just two silly exceptions: antivirus software and stuff that’s deeply embedded into the system,” Schneider-Johne said.
“And then there are old games on CD-Rom that have DRM. This DRM stuff is also deeply embedded in your system, and that’s where Windows 10 says ‘sorry, we cannot allow that, because that would be a possible loophole for computer viruses.’
“That’s why there are a couple of games from 2003-2008 with Securom, etc. that simply don’t run without a no-CD patch or some such. We can just not support that if it’s a possible danger for our users. There are a couple of patches from developers already, and there is stuff like GOG where you’ll find versions of those games that work.”

Good, death to Securom
I just did the recommended update for Win7 and they added a little something upon start-up.

Almost not invasive
Has anyone encountered their mouse sometimes not loading properly? I can't see my cursor and moving my mouse doesn't seem to work since whenever I click it's always the center of my screen. Reinstalling drivers didn't seem to help either.
EDIT: Changing ports on the back of my machine seemed to work. Maybe my mobo is crapping out.
