Does anyone know of a fix for when notifications/windows button won't work?

the one where left/right click only works on some things? only fixes ive found that work for those affected by it is a bit technical (assuming you tried sfc /scannow already) range from easy to technical

    Fix 1:

    1) Open command prompt (Win Key+X -> Command Prompt (Admin))
    2) Type net user administrator /active:yes
    3) Log off your main windows account, log on to the admin one
    4) Go to account settings, change your main account to a basic user then change it back to admin
    5) Log off of your admin account and back into the main windows account

    Fix 2:

Note that this is a final resort option, it can lead to your tiles and stuff running in to issues and will certainly remove a lot of your custom tile data.

    1) Windows Key + R, type in PowerShell
    2) Right click on the PowerShell icon (on the taskbar, it should work properly) and run as administrator
    3) Paste this into power shell and execute it:

    Code:
    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
    4) Windows Key + R, type in services.msc
    5) Look for tiledatamodelsvc and stop the service
    6) Go to C:/Users/YourName/AppData/Local (may need to enable hidden files/folders, File -> change Folder Options -> View -> Show hidden files, folders, etc)
    7) Delete the TileDataLayer folder, clear it from recycle bin, restart the tiledatamodelsvc service and wait a minute or two. All should be working properly again.

    Fix 3:

Usually just restarting the PC works temporarily

The cause of this problem is generally a bad upgrade (non clean install of windows) or an improperly applied update. If none of the fixes work you may need to reinstall.

Pretty much when I click the start button or try to look at my notifications the panels don't come up. In the end I just killed the power and did a reboot. I also read Dropbox, CCleaner, and Avast can sometimes cause the issue.

Anyone know if windows 7 oem codes that were upgraded can be transferred to a new pc? or did MS put the kibosh on that?

I've done two that worked, but I don't know for sure what their activation state was prior to putting them into 10.

Might be worth deploying WSUS to a server that runs on your domain (You will need to set up the Group Policy as well to look at that WSUS server) that way you can disable the Windows 10 updates from deploying until you are ready for windows 10 to go out if that is ever something you desire as a sysadmin.

Um, the typical OEM license (that you get bundled with hardware) has never been transferable...
If you mean an OEM that you bought/got stand-alone, it would be transferable, BUT since you already used it on the machine that was upgraded to W10, using it on another machine (at the same time) would be against microsofts terms.

Ikith, you don't need WSUS to disable GWX. MS finally released a set of registry keys a while back that completely disable/stop the upgrade process including GWX. And as Jamison already said, he has GPOs active to disable it, but the machine that upgraded wasn't member of the domain. In that scenario a WSUS would be just as pointless as the GPOs he set since they don't reach the client.

I know a lot of you around here decry Windows 10 for one reason or another, but they added a new feature to the Insider Preview build (set to come out with the Anniversary Update next month) and it's pretty cool: you can now link your Windows 10 digital activation license (including those gained via the free Windows 7/8(.1) upgrade process) to your Microsoft account and use it on new computers indefinitely (obviously 1 license can only be on 1 PC at a time, but still).

This means if you change your motherboard/CPU, you can reinstall Windows without having to call support or buy a new key.

This is great if you upgrade your PC a lot or if your motherboard/CPU needs to be replaced.

I suppose it's bad if you're part of the contingent of individuals who believe that Windows 10 is simply an enormous botnet made to create an all seeing eye style of spy network that will ruin your life as well as the lives of those you love.

Any details on how to link the license/entitlement to the account and how to activate a fresh install with it?
Asking cause I'm one of those paranoid folks who stick to a local, non-MS account

I still don't understand he windows 10 hate. I've been running W10 on my work laptop since the first enterprise preview release and my gaming PC is still running on insider preview on the fast ring. The only issue we've had at work is a small number of PCs on our network that were installed by a vendor and not domain joined was hit with the upgrade. This prompted a change and now that subset of PCs are domain joined and managed by my team and our enterprise AV,Siem, wsus, sccm bells and whistles. That was a mistake on our part and not on MS. The previous regime weren't as strict as we are about our prod network. We have W10 playing roles on some prod machines and we've also been toying with W10 on our vdi environment.

    Can someone explain the hate?

When there's change, there's hate. And I guess the aggressive "upgrade now!" nudging by GWX and all those "accidental" upgrades made it even worse.
And not everyone is happy with the "Windows as a service" route MS wants to take.

Unless open source Linux distros gain traction in the mainstream everyone is gonna have to accept that what MS is pushing via 10 is how things are gonna play out with our operating systems from here on out.

Figured I'd post here since it's Win10 but I'm having an issue with the window snap feature. It works if I do it manually (drag window to edge) but the keyboard shortcuts don't work. They just stopped working one day. I figured a restart would solve the issue but no. A google search has done me no good. I actually use this feature quite a lot and is probably the best thing from Win8. Anyone have any clues? Oh I forgot to mention that other shortcut combinations with the win key work but no dice on arrows.

I'm going to guess you did it already but just in case go to Settings -> System -> Multitasking and turn all of the options off and on (yeah I know). It's the only thing I've found that has helped people fix that problem, normally it just magically starts working again if this doesn't work. Still unsure what causes it. Otherwise just make sure desktop scaling is @ 100% (not sure if they ever fixed it but at the beginning of TH2 snap did not work with anything higher).

Free W10 is up at the end of the month (29th). I still use Win7 Pro on my PC, and I'm not sure if I should upgrade.

If you're a tinfoil hat cult follower that believes 7 is the best and last OS, and that you're afraid of M$ taking information from you even tho they've been doing since vista then it probably isn't for you. However if you aren't fucking crazy then it might be a good OS upgrade for you if you're not running some archic hardware they you've clung onto since the windows XP days.

Should you decide to upgrade, remember those 2 things:
DO A BACKUP and test if restore works. Upgrade works most of the time, but when it fails it tends to fail horribly. Or, if you should want to go back to Win7 within the first 30 days, there's a chance that will bork your system completely.
Don't use express settings, read through the options, and if you're paranoid (or just a bit nervous about all the stuff MS wants to gather like me) untick everything besides smartscreen.

And remember that the upgrade process can uninstall programs/drivers MS deems not supported, or it can break programs.
I upgraded my laptop (from 8.1) and my PC (from 7). On the laptop the upgrade removed some dolby software that was installed together with the audio drivers, so pretty harmless. On the PC it completely screwed up FFXIV (black screen and/or insta-crash on main window launch) and I had to re-install it. Aside from that it went smooth and I haven't found anything that would make me want to revert. Only thing that still bugs me are the forced updates, still hoping someone finds a way to change/circumvent that...

If you don't mind the Windows as a service concept or full-screen prompts that you seemingly can't avoid unless you keep up to date then windows 10 is a bit ahead of 7. My biggest gripe has been bluetooth handling (primarily file transfer), needing the GPE to stop automatic updates, and my quick access menus in the file explorer, which I found to be less clunky in the 7 environment.

Won't be able to avoid it for long either way with directx12.
