Windows 10 upgrade - how would this work?

If you're a tinfoil hat cult follower that believes 7 is the best and last OS, and that you're afraid of M$ taking information from you even tho they've been doing since vista then it probably isn't for you. However if you aren't fucking crazy then it might be a good OS upgrade for you if you're not running some archic hardware they you've clung onto since the windows XP days.

My hardware isn't super old but it's old. 2010 build originally, on my 2nd gpu. I think my power supply might be on the fritz, but that's another topic entirely. I'm not scared of W10, but it is ugly at first and tedious to change so much of the default ugliness. (speaking from a singular experience upgrading gf's laptop from W8.1)

Once I accepted Windows 10 as functioning more like Android or iOS (yes, I know you don't technically have to update those) I've actually been super happy with it. I run it on 3 of my own machines, my work PC, and have set up 12-14 other PC's at work. It's been snappy and stable, and I like not having 6+ years of updates stacked onto the core OS. It handles sound switching boatloads better than 7 does (a fairly big deal on my gaming PC) and switches to a secondary screen with zero resolution problems (something I've had problems with in 7). At work the start screen has been fantastic for customizing our production systems and helping the users keep organized.

Since MS still hasn't offered a way (pre-anniversary update) to lock in the upgrade for retail keys that aren't currently in use, I set up multiple VM's and put them on the fast ring so I could connect them to my MS account. So far the plan seems to be working well.

I just upgraded from 3770k to 6700k, new motherboard and all that. I had a windows 7 oem key that i upgraded to windows 10. I kept my flash drive that housed the windows 10 iso for install/updating.

I reformated my OS drive and installed windows 10 fresh with the iso drive. I skipped all prompts to activate with product key. But when I check in my settings, it shows my windows is activated. How is that?

I am selling my old cpu mobo and throwing in Old windows key since I thoughti t was linked to the motherboard. But I am guessing it isnt?

Idk what is going on here, but I bought a windows 10 oem key that I am thinking I dont need anymore. It is otw in the mail.

Im guessing I dont really need a new key, right?

If you had Win7 AND THEN upgraded to Win10 on the new machine, then no, you won't need the one in the mail. This was the preferred method Microsoft wanted everyone to do to upgrade to the new OS. Buying it would have been for those that wanted the Pro Edition or those that never had Windows to begin with.

Dunno where else to put this; but on the 2nd Microsoft is forcing Win10 users to use cortana. It's a forced update, and you can't disable it anymore.

I'd put that here. It's also to push their incentive for not pushing any OS after 10, ala iOS route.

As far as Cortana, I personally don't have it disabled but if I do think click it at most all it does is highlight whatever color my desktop is at the time. Hardly noticable.

So okay. I just got the update.

I did have a power blink in the middle, it reset then I was able to install it, the problem was..

Bleh, I couldn't sign into my profile >< Tried 10 times, no luck. Finally a tech gave me a fix, which was: reboot the pc. It signed in fine after that.

If you're having that problem, try that guys. I did go ahead and neuter Cortana but so far so good. Only losses was my DS3 driver took a dump and I had to reinistall it and I had to restore some default programs (including Firefox); I'd consider that minor.

When I did my upgrade a month or so ago, my laptop would always hang on boot the first time I started it up. I thought it was something pretty serious, but after some google searching, I found an option under power management for a quick boot that, once disabled, seemed to fix the problem.

So now that the free upgrade is over, what happens for those who have Windows 7 or 8 and never uninstalled the update that nagged people to upgrade to W10, is that automaticly removed or?

It will be, yeah, although I think it'll take another update from MS that rolls out over the next couple of weeks.

BTW there's still a way to do a free upgrade if desired through their Assistive Technologies program, but they plan on shutting that down soon due to abuse.

Supposedly (I haven't tested this) the upgrade thingie only checks your local systems clock as well, if someone skipped and have second thoughts.

AFAIK GWX (the "upgrade now" annoyance) already stopped nagging (or greatly reduced it) a week or 2 before the upgrade phase was over. MS put out a patch because they thought ppl who didn't upgrade till now won't do it on last chance.

So last night I shut down and downloaded an update. This morning when I turned my comp on, it started the install. Looks to be a big one. IT went though several stages before I went to have breakfast and play with my son. I came back like 45 min later and the screen is black wit only the circle swirl processing icon going. I thought maybe something had hung up so I did a manual restart. Lo and behold, I got a "recovering install process" or something there abouts message. And now its back at the same screen again. I guess it appears to be doing something?

My question is has anyone else had a major update like this? I don't recall any of the installs taking this long or being on 1 screen for so long. I'll run some errands for an hour or so but that should be more than enough time to install all the files. If I come back and the screen is unchanged, what can I do?

It took me like 3 hours to complete the install on my laptop, so I assume it's normal, just wait until it finishes.

So I checked in on the update before I got feedback here, ended up reverting to last update so I could access my computer and get to gaming. Based off what you guys have said, I'll install the update tonight before I go to sleep and it can take however long it needs. Thanks for the info!

UPDATE:

So I let the new install go over night and I awoke today on the same black screen with rotating dots. This time a reset was able to kick it through to the next portion of the install and everything finished. Fast forward to just recently, I get a blue screen of death and when I try to restart I see the same black screen again. I fiddle with this a bit but can't get past it, so I resort to restoring to previous version. How long can I hold off on this new win10 update? Indefinitely? It's definitely messing up my system.

Oh and I hope no one here has webcams. I understand the update effed up webcams. I don't have one, so I don't care (not to mention I've had enough perverts asking me about that anyway.)

Rulke, it's a known issue with the only current fix which is to run Win10 in Safe Mode.

Microsoft hopes to have an update out sometime in September to fix the freezing and Webcam issues.
