Thinking of returning for Heavensward (2.0 player)

With the addition of my ps4 and now that I'm playing WoW and other games less or not at all, my interest in FFXIV has peaked again.

I was only a level 47 white mage when I stopped playing, and a 30-40 paladin and warrior. I really enjoyed leveling at first but fate grinding was all the rage and I got sick of it, never giving the game a real chance. I did quite a few dungeons and aeon battles and enjoyed them though.

Would returning be worth it? Is leveling any different? Are the new classes/jobs interesting? I feel I should have gone with bard from the start originally but I always try to play classes with quick que times and high need to find groups fast so healing would still work.

Crafting really interests me too but I honestly don't even know how that works or if I can do it without money to start with.

Would I be so far behind or in a hole coming back now? I can play across both my ps4 and pc right? Cause that would be huge.

Is the game really any different or is there enough new and/or engaging things to keep playing for? I can't imagine playing for more than a few hours a week.

    Thanks for the help.

No one can answer if returning is worth it. If you enjoy an epic story and don't mind watching a ton of cut scenes (and there will be HOURS of cut scenes between 47 and 60), then you will probably really enjoy your first job to 60. The storyline will provide enough exp/quests/gear for you to mostly go from 47 to 60 without doing anything else, meaning you can skip the FATEs you disliked before. It'll be all stories and dungeons. And if you run out of story exp, you can queue quickly on whm for a dungeon that is going to provide several hundred k worth of exp.

As for the new classes, a lot of people love DRK and hate AST/MCH. To unlock them you would have to hit 50 first and do everything through the 2.55 storyline to get to Ishgaard, so you are a while from being able to unlock them.

Getting your crafts to 60 isn't really that hard, you can use leves, blue script turnins, and guild company turnins to level cheaply. Not free, but cheaply. It's everything after 60 that is a kick in the balls with crafting.

You would be behind, you wouldn't (in my opnion) be "too far" behind to catch up. If you played semi-regularly you could certainly have a decently geared character by the time 3.1 dropped, even only playing a couple days a week.

You can play on both PS4 and PC, but you have to pay for both (like FFXI, you have to pay for both platforms).

The game is not different at all. While a lot of people loved the flying, main story, and size of the new zones, after the new expansion smell wore off, that was everyone's exact complaint - we're playing 2.0 again, just at level 60 in Idyllshire instead of level 50 in Mor Dhona. Tomes lockouts are the same, tome accumulation is the same, 1 serious end-game raid that you can only beat with your 7 best friends you've played games with since 2003, and for crafters, a far more serious wall to gearing our characters than we saw at 2.0

    If you didn't like 2.0, you won't like 3.0.

It's definitely up for you to decide. DRK is the new hotness in terms of tanking and popular by default, Machinist is cool but all kinds of what the fuck and yoshi's desperate attempt to avoid any similarities to Corsair from XI or a gunner from any other MMO. Astrologian is cool..but needs potency boosts whereas WHM got insane boosts that it didn't need.

Crafting is a bit easier but they have their own source of tomes as well..but that's nothing to worry about for awhile given your consideration. As said..3.0 is less of an expansion and more of a forced purchase patch, rather than being offered for free. So it's 2.0 with flying and a sort of "soft reset" on our progression. They did seem to gain a bit of a better skillset in terms of production ...as a lot of 2.x patches were obviously suffering from 3.0's development in a sense but at the same time...it doesn't feel like it should have been called an expansion. For example Zilart in XI brought us new systems and actually expanded on the jobs all the while giving us new areas and so on - 3.0...was really nothing significant in that fashion.

So really, you'll have to play through all of 2.0 - 2.55 and get a feel for the game again anyway..but at current time..XIV feels like the XIV from 2.0..so in 2 years really...nothings changed in comparison to even XI in the same time frame.

Well I didn't like grinding fates to level, I enjoyed pretty much everything else.

When you say pay for both platforms do you mean buy the game for both, or pay a monthly fee for both.

    Cause if so wtf.

I'd just go PC then so I could play at work, would love to play on my big screen though.

Thanks for the other information, seems solid. Actually seems worth it.

Yup, but the story is awesome and the first run through at least is totally worth it if you are a FF fan at all. If anything play it for the single player experience then make you decision from there imo.

Are there any free weeks or months coming up, or return scrolls of some type?

If there are, we wouldnt know... Makes no sense for SE to announce this in advance Lol

Fate grinding isnt "mandatory" to level up anymore, plenty of XP in dungeons/quests etc.

You have to have the base game for each, and a copy of Heavenward for each platform. You only need a single monthly subscription though.

I haven't seen anything about a free login campaign coming up.

You're goddamn crazy if you think "a couple days a week" will get someone who didn't have the drive to get through 2.0 to "decently geared by 3.1." Unless you mean 8 hours a day, a few days a week. Going a couple days a week 2-3 hours you might be able to hit 60 by 3.1.

Other games announce and send out emails to bring back players all the time. Or do some type of scroll of resurrection thing. I missed the last login campaign cause I got the email the day after it ended lol.

DRK is pretty sweet. Thinking of taking it to 60 next. Crafting is still not worth it, even less than before. Gear is gated with scrips, like tomes. Bard/Machinist (basically the same job with different weapons/ability names, yay glamour job!) had their mobility taken away. Main scenario will help get you to 60 easily. After that it's dungeon/FATE grinding like 2.0. There side quests, though they're all pretty repetitive and forgettable, but it's an alternative.

I've heard complaints that the end game is pretty laughable, too. You'll have to someone else on that. On the plus side, there's a casual mode, so everyone can experience the dungeon and story.
Like Vegan said tho, if you didn't like 2.0, you won't like 3.0. Lot of cut and paste, and Yoshi P seems afraid of trying new things. Pay for a month or two, finish the story, and see if it hooks you again.

Even for XI, but SE is weird when it comes to XIV.

Yeah if you decide to come back, it will be a long ass line of stuff u need to do before you even finish 2.0 content. And you will be forced to finish all 2.0 MSQ before you can access 3.0 stuff so yeah good luck. Playing for 3-4 hours a day still will take you days to finish 2.0 MSQ. I suggest skipping all cutscenes until you get to 3.0 content.

Maybe I shouldn't even buy Heavensward to start with? Or does it come with a free month lol.

I'm assuming most people play on PC but how is the game on ps4? I can always use a ps4 controller with pc but curious.

I've heard the game on PS4 is actually pretty solid so it's not a bad option.

As for whether to come back or not based on when you last played.. I mean, it is right in the sense that 3.0 is basically 2.0, but with bigger zones, a higher level cap and flying, but then again.. at least doing content your first time through, you certainly have a lot of it and first time experiences are always pretty neat.

I probably wouldn't buy Heavensward though, at least right away, until you get close to unlocking it which is TONS of quests starting at 50, so..

I still enjoy the game because we're working on the current raid, and PVP isn't..terrible? But again, it's up to how you look at having fun. You don't have to grind fates to level anymore, they're just the 'fuck off and mindlessly grind' sort of thing to do. You can do hunts later on, the quests give exp of course, and dungeons reward exp a lot better than they did when you played in 2.0 so

Like everyone said, no one can give you a definitive answer whether you'll like it or not, best you can do is either drop like $13 (or however much depending on you owning the game) and try, or wait for a free weekend.

As long as you plan to not level past 50 in this "preview" phase if you do come back, you don't need to buy it. You're forced to buy it to level to 60 however, even if you don't touch HW exclusive content. It's up to you really, you may enjoy it since you're not in the same boat where people expected the expansion to actually be different or evolve from 2.x era, so you may not have a dampened outlook

Also keep in mind that if you hit 50 without buying heavensward, you get no further exp.

If you buy Heavensward, you continue to gain exp on all the 50+ Main Story Quests.

And there are a fuckton of them.

about 80. it is not fun to do, and they get you about halfway through level 50 since they only give 4.8k per
