What's the point of adding FC content if you can do it without an FC

They said early on that there would be a "mercenary" option for people not in an FC to join others through the PF. I assume the Ishgard airships are either for this or DF.

Being in an FC allows you to customize your airship whereas if you take the Ishgard ones you'll just have to live what what you get. Airship parts will effect which islands you can reach and various RNG elements, and in the future we'll be able to make battleships.

We’ll be adding new content known as "Lords of Verminion."
This was a joke brought up in the past in a Developers’ Blog post, but we actually went ahead and made it real.

Lords of Verminion is an RTS-like battle game where you use minions. You place minions in the field and once you decide where you want them to move they will automatically attack. This is why Minagawa has created a new option for gamepad controls.

It might be wise to go ahead and collect all the minions you can. However, it’s not like you won’t be able to win if you don’t possess rare minions, so don't worry. Also, we'll have a rating system for matching, so you'll be matched depending on your win rates.

Though it’s still a bit early to talk about this, you’ll be able to access and accept quests for Patch 4.0 even if you have not completed the main scenario for the Patch 3.x series. Similarly, you’ll be able to unlock new jobs regardless of your scenario progression. Due to this, we feel the need to create a system that will allow you to watch a digest of what happened. However, for the 3.0 story, since everyone has seen everything up until now I think it was enjoyable, and while there were some pros and cons for this, I think having the system we did for the 3.x series was a good thing.

So much speculation can be made from this for 4.0.

1) 3.X series will likely conclude the ARR/HEAVENSWARD scenario completely, but still tie into 4.X somehow (allowing new players to skip to 4.X). Or maybe not at all.
2) 4.X Will be completely independent from the other two games.
3) New lvl 1 (or lvl 30?) starter zones possible without ARR/HEAVENSWARD.
4) New jobs without ARR/HEAVENSWARD level restrictions.
5) Cash Shop Level Boost may be possible. (Oh noes!)

How people glossed over this is anyone's guess, but this is gigantor news. In fact this is easily the biggest news of the Live Letter that will surely go unnoticed for a while. It's like they did a roundabout way of saying 4.0 will be FFXIV's version of The Burning Crusade.

- Considering lifting GC restrictions in PvP matchmaking
- EU data centre confirmed for mid-October
- TP bar for party members in patch 3.07
- The Darkside effect from the Job Action trailer might make an appearance in the future
- 4.0 story quests and new jobs won’t require completion of the 3.x story
- Patch 3.1 dungeons: Saint Mocianne Arboretum and Pharos Sirius (Hard)
- New 24-man raid: Void Ark will use the same loot rules as WoD, Cait Sith involved
- Screenshots of Airship endgame content zone
- Saint Endalim Scholasticate side quests and Vanu Vanu beast tribe dailies
- New primal battle, details will be teased during the Rising in-game event
- Lord of Verminion pet battles
- Gold Saucer added to the Challenge Log
- Housing features: house sharing, removal of inactive houses
- Adding flying to various mounts
- Multiple pieces can now be previewed with "Try On"
- Multi-slot items can now be glamoured
- Undersized party will now show the completion time for duties.

Some of it we knew already, but most of it was new info... release timings and greater detail.
