Also if you get aphone call while on the app, the chat will stop and resume after the call

Well, I'm hoping that Nintendo is truly using this rollout as a dry run before the paid service to work out exactly what they need for such an app to function properly.

Right now though, yeah, its a pretty hot mess.

I've already sent my complaints to Nintendo Support letting them know that the community, as a baseline, expects X,Y, and Z as standard functions of something like this and it's in their best interests to make their online presence, while maybe not as robust as PSN or XBLive, but certainly streamlined and easy to use. Also made a strong point that something like this isn't really intended for the grade school crowd, but more angled toward late teens, twenty somethings, and the 30 year olds that started on the NES and that those crowds want a certain level of functionality that this currently does not provide.

Don't forget that the app has to be in the foreground and you can't turn off the display, and you hopefully don't get any phone calls or text messages while using it.

Nope. The app has to be in foreground for voice chat to work, it doesn't work with the display off, and even something like pulling down the notification bar kills the chat.
