I can't imagine paying 60 bucks for Octopath. Looks too much like a 3DS game that got put on the NSW.
30-40? Sure. Unless we're talking 2-300 hours of content, then maybe.

2-300 hours of content is what you consider worth $60? lol.
Considering each demo storyline takes roughly an hour to complete, and there are 8 protagonists, that's
8 hours of introductory story right off the bat.
Then consider that the demo has around 4-5 hours of content total, if you're a completionist, we can probably multiple that by 4 to get a completionist's playthrough time of all the introductions/starting areas, and that's 16-20 hours.
I'd be shocked if this game wasn't at least 80-100+ hours of content total, which is easily worth full price. And speak for yourselves -- the HD-2D concept is beautiful to me, and the dialogue pretty great, much darker than anything I'd have expected from SE.
Really, really hoping they use this style and engine to do more games in the future. A FFVI remake like this would be unreal awesome.
For this type of game though? 2-300 is excessive and I was mostly making a point that the game can't afford to be short and try to charge standard console price whilst sporting what is essentially a smartphone game's look. But 120+ for this type of game isn't unrealistic. It's sprites on a background. It's a minimal effort game. It can afford to have plenty of content.
In contrast, I'd be surprised if it manages to pull 80 hours without repeating or being repetitive like BD was. Sounds to be the same in terms of story flow and general concept. Color me burned by their prior games. Didn't enjoy watching the same thing be retold multiple times with only slight differentiation.
I judge the pricing of a game mostly on the look too. I'd rather spend $60 on a game that looks expensive than one that plays well.
Eh, I judge price mostly on playtime and quality. It's why Mario Rabbids, while good, was a little underwhelming for its price at around ~20-30 hours.
Octopath seems much larger in comparison. It's clearly targeting fans of old school JRPGs with its graphical style, while visually modernizing it with HD lighting and 3D backgrounds. Personally, that's a lot more appealing than Bravely Default's 3D chibi character models.
That said, I hope they address some of the minor issues I outlined on the last page. Sprites could use a little more personality, in the vein of FFVI's. They'll probably polish the vignette and depth of field.
The fact that several of the quests in Octopath Traveler's demo had multiple endings, depending on how you solved them, is immensely exciting to me. Seems almost open world-ish in the creativity you can employ, potentially.
I wouldn't pay $60 for it either, but that's not to say it's not worth $60. I won't pay $60 for any game, period, any more. Time is a far more limiting factor than money, and I've got a backlog big enough that waiting a few months/years for the price to drop is no sweat for a single player game.
I still think Octopath will be one of my favorite games released in 2018 that I won't play until the PC port in 2020.
Are you actually so ill-informed that you believe this statement?
Hurray doublepost
I guess I am?
Doesn't look like a high effort game at all. Let me turn up ambient occlusion to 200% and fix my lighting. Looks great! The sprites look poor, the combat looks like something out of RPG maker, the animations look phoned in. I'm simply not sold. But do carry on and I'll reserve further judgment for when the game is further in development. I want to like it, but I don't yet.
Have you ever seen RPG maker? All of the spell animations far exceed anything from it, and we've only seen the starting abilities...
Just because the game has a purposefully stylized art style from a sprite-based era, and isn't photo-realistic, doesn't mean the game is "low effort." And if you don't like turn-based JRPGs like classic Final Fantasy titles, then you aren't the audience this title is aimed at.
There's certainly things that could and perhaps will be improved. For instance, different weapons should have different sprites in battle, which was pretty typical for 2D FF. But let's keep criticism realistic and not hyperbolic?
I only want to know how stupid the rest of the octo path actions are

I find it funny you guys are arguing over this when Hollow Knight is 2D, beautiful, rich in content/play time and is cheap. The game should not be that much, it doesn't even look slightly worth that.
I mean when the thing that looks best is the background and not characters it seems to me that the majority of development time goes into making the background and added effects...which well, if they're sacrificing content for looks that would be hilarious since it doesn't even look that good.
The sprite work is pretty rough and frankly I would've done the opposite with nicer sprites and rougher backgrounds.
forum fucked doubled
BG in a nutshell:
BG: "SQUARE SHOULD GO BACK TO ITS ROOTS"
SE: "Okay, here is a sprite turn-based JRPG"
BG: "OMG WHAT IS THIS MOBILE LIKE SHIT"
Double... when I only clicked once... cool shit.
So the only reason you guys are swooning over this completely lackluster game is muh nostalgia
Got it
Thats what the game is going for, so yes.
