Are there even GBA VC games on the Wii U? I know they do GBA VC games on the New 3DS.

This next year is gonna be a hell of a weak one for the Wii U though. 10 Months (Give or take) until Zelda and NX.

Edit: Also if the release schedule stays as dry as it does, outside of a surprise release, that means there won't be an Animal Crossing title for the Wii U. Which is huge since there hasn't been a console without AC since the GBA. (N64 did get a JP only launch)

There are, off top of head, metroid fusion, all MM Battle Network games and Zero games, minish cap, etc, many more but idc enough to remember lol, only VC game I bought on it was LoZ LttP since first Zelda and lost my old SNES version long ago and don't care for the watered down GBA version (even though it does have an extra added dungeon).

The NX will not be sold at a loss upon its March 2017 launch, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has confirmed.

    1
"We are not thinking of launching the hardware at a loss," Kimishima said in a Q&A about the company's latest financial report. This may come as a surprise to some, as the Wii U sold at a loss, as did the PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, and ostensibly Xbox One.

"When Wii U was launched, the yen was very strong. I am assuming that situation will not repeat itself. Selling at a loss at launch would not support the business, so we are keeping that mind in developing NX."

Kimishima said the NX needs a strong software lineup, which is one of the reasons NX's launch will miss the holiday window. "One of the reasons for choosing the launch timing that we did is so that the software lineup will be ready in time for the hardware launch. Not only at launch, but we also need to be able to continuously release titles after launch. We are planning for this to be a platform that consumers can enjoy for a long time."

Kimishima seems determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past. Iwata was beloved, and will be missed... but it is nice to see the company (tentatively) moving towards a methodology that makes business sense. A competitive gaming platform with a strong list of launch titles would definitely start to push the company back into the right direction.

    Hoping, at least.

I'd like to see the dominating force Nintendo was once in the mid-eighties to mid-nineties again.

To me, hardware not being sold at a loss implies a lack of faith in the available software library.

Is $50 one way or the other really going to greatly affect the number of units that sell? I guess it'd be hard to say until they've announced a price.

How much do they usually lose when consoles sell at a loss anyway? I realize now that I have no idea. I just pulled that $50 out of my ass.

I would too, but the same can't be said about the developers/IPs back then.

I'll miss Konami being the behemoth it was and IPs that have long since died like Double Dragon.

It differs greatly from console to console. IIRC the PS3 was terribad but was sold back then for $600 right? I think the PS4 was closer. I don't know anything about Nintendo tho...

You're right it wasn't just Nintendo. The timing of all that coming together back then was amazing.

I believe the Wii U was Nintendo's first console to sell at loss. Everything else was at cost or profitable at day 1. When that happens, especially with a company like Nintendo who has such massive 1st party IP's to throw around, software sell-through rate is very important. The Wii U did well there, but not well enough.

50$ one way or the other is technically one whole game when considering attach rate, so it is important in that regard to have 2-3 games attached to every console purchase and that drive up the profit considerably. I don't see Nintendo going above $400 USD or whatever the PS4 Neo will cost, but kind of see $300 as a really poor price point perception wise when compared to other options on market. If they launch with a Mario + Zelda ready to go and any mix of Smash 4/Splatoon/Mario Maker update versions plus a console Metroid, Fire Emblem, or Donkey Kong that would be a pretty nice way to float a 350-400 price tag. Thats not mentioning any good grace they're able to garner with a big 3rd party launch title like FF7 Remake.

I'm like 99% sure the PS4 didn't sell at a loss. Like I could have sworn they made about $20 every unit.

Close, technically the 3DS was the first after the price change when they realized it wasn't going to sell at cost.

You could make the opposite argument on the same evidence, too. "The library is so good that we can price higher because of the demand it will create."

Honestly, not selling at a loss is just a good business decision after the catastrophe that the WiiU has been. I'm sure they hope people will buy it, but that's a matter of how much trust people have lost and how much faith there is that this will be better.

The estimated BoM based on teardowns came in lower, but it's possible that other factors like distribution could have pushed their cost past retail. Either way, their plan was to negate any loss with basic add-ons like PS+ and a game. I think MS largely did the same - the hardware cost was similarly a little under MSRP when it came out.

I think it just depends on what the NX is. If Nintendo is putting out a comparable machine to the PS4 and Xbox One, then they can put out a great machine at a profit day one, even if it's just basically a PS4 Neo with their logo/OS on it. If they're trying to do a dual screen setup and all that again, that'd be different.

Iirc, all the PS4 had to do at launch for Sony was the consumer buying 1 game with it to be profitable and iirc the Xbone needed 1 game purchased to break even.

Nintendo confirms that there will be no Nintendo Direct this year, and instead they will be holding a tree house event to give people a chance to see the new zelda game. The NX will not even be mentioned, and Zelda will be the only game available to attendees in order "To ensure attendees are able to truly experience the freedom of exploration the game offers", or whatever that means. What gaming website can we quote again?
