Nintendo is only confirming that the Switch will not run the physical media from the Wii U / 3DS. They are holding off on announcing digital compatibility with those and their mobile titles.

So basically Wii U and 3DS titles will be available digitally, you'll just have to buy them again. FFS.

Expect some work around, no way Nintendo gets away with this when their more successful competitors have a passable form of backwards compatibility.

And if you've bought the games digitally you'd be gtg in theory. If you want to latch onto physical media more power to you, but that's not the way the world is going.

Im not buying that the dock does not provide addition processing power to the system at all. There are numerous other way to design that casing if its only function was to provide TV output and battery charging. The fact that it covers the screen when docked (instead of having both displays active at once like the Wii U) is a big tell.

Most likely answer if it's not directly providing external processing is that it's providing extra cooling and the size of the dock is for fans.
The system will run at a lower clock rate while running off the built in display, and when plugged in the extra cooling will balance out the increased load needed for 1080p or higher rendering.

The battery life issue doesn't bother me as much as im sure it will have multiple external power solutions and I would tend to keep it plugged in while at home anyways. But low battery life will give it some pretty bad press.

The only official word on battery life is that it will provide a "comfortable" play session.

Everyone talking about compatibility with 3ds games does realize this shit only has a single display (at a time) right? The dual display nature of the ds line is a key point of its design. While yes both displays could be rendered on one, it's not exactly an aesthetically pleasing solution.
I wouldn't hold my breath for a second on 3ds compatibility

This has been my incentive for it, price/battery-life withstanding. It feels like something the original WiiU should have been, but the mobile tech wasn't there yet, so the limited-distance wireless streaming to a controller's screen was the compromise. Originally Posted by Krandor
I mostly play handheld shit, or things on their own screens, so a console'ish experience designed around that has appeal to me. It's one of the reasons I've been wanting to get a Surface Pro for mobile PC gaming on low/med settings. If anything I hope Switch replaces the 3DS over time, because I can't stand the god awful screen and ergomonics of that handheld.

The only way I have any interest in this is if it's got backwards compatibility with WiiU. I don't care if it's digital only, I don't even own a WiiU yet, but I'd get a Switch to catch up on the games I missed. No BC, I'll just buy a WiiU instead once prices tank.

I don't go buying a system unless it has games I want to play, so this prolly won't be day 1. But if it has games I want to play I'll prolly buy it eventually.
