Yeah. Looks like it could be easily resized for a 3DS sized case.

But they probably want the cases to line up against the PS4/XBone cases as a true console.

I agree its a lot of wasted space, but resizing it isn't the answer. They need to take better advantage of the interior space.

Does adding more to the inside of that case increase profit? I don't think so; I for one welcome our waste-of-space overlords.

D: I suppose if you don't wanna waste the plastic just buy digital.

I will say that I for whatever reason love the artwork on the box inside and outside.

sorry but resizing is the answer. That is just a waste of ressources and space.

They probably will. Remember original PS boxes? Then they went to the CD jewel cases.

Switch has to show itself off as a 4real console.

Also how does the Switch case compare to a PSVita case?

Would be a more viable solution if it fit more than 2-3 digital games on it by default.

But yeah, it's a big box 100% because, in people's minds, small box = handheld, big box = console. I don't care enough about the environment to be mad about it. I'd care about shelf space but I'll probably have less than 5 total physical games for my Switch when I eventually get one anyways.

I'd wager it has something to do with preventing theft also. I'unno.

When I worked in two different retailers they taught us the two things that were most stolen were 3ds games and sd memory cards. It was due to the product size being so small that they could easily maneuver around and hide the product while unboxing/tearing it open then slipping the game or memory card into their pockets. While we had cameras everywhere in the stores it was harder to catch someone messing around with smaller products. That being said, I think the reality is that they want to show that it is a console first and not a handheld. I do believe that the mentality of people are that bigger = the more console it is in the mind of a consumer. Admittedly I do want the case to be that size because I have special shelving that I put all my nintendo games on and they fit longways and if the new console cases didn't fit in there I'd have to leave them in a pile like some kind of a savage. <-- pretty selfish reasoning but yay for not having to buy new shelves and everything will line up nicely.

    ---

As for the memory available on the system I don't really particularly care how much/how little is there. The way I see it is if they had more on-memory they would probably charge us more for it as an excuse. Honestly it's better to keep the memory minimal and let the consumer figure out if they want to be a digital buyer and save money by buying discounted memory cards (or using spares they have like I do). And for the physical consumer they don't wanna buy something with a ton of on memory if they plan on just being a physical buyer so they can't bitch "bitchbitchbitch I didn't want to spend this much money on space I don't need bitchbitchbitch." Because that's consumers.

Genuine question because I haven't used my 3DS in years: how does that handle game updates? Does it not have them at all, are they stored in the system, etc? Since Switch is cart based in not expecting installs to be necessary, but I'm pretty sure I've got more than 32GB just of version update/patches on my ps4 by now. If switch really is trying to be a 'console', I'm expecting something similar.

There's a base system storage but you'll want a memory card for much larger updates. E.G. Animal Crossing New Leaf Amiibo update

Only 25.9GB of the 32GB is available to users
    http://www.dualshockers.com/2017/02/...d-gb-internal/

    Launch Game file sizes
    • Dragon Quest Heroes I-II – 32 GB
    • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 7 GB
    • Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence with Power-Up Kit – 5 GB
    • Snipperclips: Cut it Out – 1.60 GB
    • Puyo Puyo Tetris — 1.09 GB
    • I Am Setsuna – 1.40 GB
    • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 13.4 GB
    https://www.nintendo.co.jp/software/switch/

So DQ Heroes won't actually fit on the hard drive unless you upgrade the space.

As someone who rarely buys console games digitally, I'd like to know if the games are going to require data installs before they're playable (though I doubt that question can be answered yet). I recall my PS3 HDD filling up with various game install shit despite having never purchased a digital game for it. The size of the console storage won't really matter to me without that answer.

Switch games are on cartridge so no installs.

I don't think you understood his question.

I would think any game updates will require some amount of system storage.

If carts have additional space for updates I'd be surprised and delighted. But I doubt it.
