At least the Switch Pro is better quality than the XBone Elite

Being honest, what are peoples' thoughts on there being a Switch Pro or somesuch a year down the line? It seems like with such room to grow software-wise, and the hardware hiccups going on, I could see it happening.

I honestly think that depends on what Nintendo wants to do with the DS line.

Nintendo has been pretty strong on not releasing an upgrade "mid-cycle" to their consoles (keep in mind the NES and SNES redesigns didn't change internals and were only cosmetic late cycle changes), but do it pretty regularly to the handhelds (sometimes to a detriment, hello Gameboy Micro).

If the Switch continues to do well (as early figures indicate it has) they may feel more comfortable fully investing on the portable aspect and incorporate a DS add-on along with an upgraded console in 2-3 years. If the hype dies down and the console does moderately well (better than Wii U, not as good as Wii, probably more along Gamecube numbers), then they may hedge that by releasing a new DS independent of the Switch.

If that is their thinking, they kind of need to have a tentative action plan within the year if they have not already. The 3DS is starting to be pretty old even by Nintendo tech standards, so a yay or nay on a new separate handheld or Switch add-on/redesign is probably on their minds.

I'd be fine with either, and I honestly expected them to of hand some firm statements on the future of the DS line outside of their PR speak for "we don't know yet" when the Switch was announced. Though with 3D not really taking off like people hoped across the board, it is a little difficult to say where Nintendo would take a DS product line in the future without attaching it to the Switch.

I don't think Nintendo is going to give up on the pocket-sized handheld market that easily. There's a lot of market for a compact ~$150 handheld that would be underserved by the Switch.

One thing I could see is "forward compatibility" between the "4DS" and the Switch; meaning that 4DS games will run on Switch, but not vice versa.

It's a good question. Personally I hope that in around 3 years there will be a major hardware revision with more power and better battery, and if they designed things smartly now it would remain 100% compatible with existing titles. Pop in a new chip from Nvidia and away they go.

And on that same line of thinking, there's nothing preventing them from releasing a smaller one down the road that is handheld only. Coupled with advances in tech they could probably push out something a fraction of the current size. If they wanted to.

I harp on this too much, but Nintendo did just barely miss the "sweet spot" that Pascal brought to the table with power and battery. That alone makes me think a revision in the next couple of years could be fruitful.

Double post, but different topic. Found this 3D printed stand posted to Reddit that I'm planning to make at the local library:

I could see them doing a slightly smaller handheld version without removable joycons (to keep the manufacturing costs lower) depending on how well/bad the whole "play two players anywhere" takes off with games that utilize the joycons sideways. Could still keep a docking functionality, just you'd need to invest in a separate controller.....or just a video-out box that runs via cable to the handheld.

That is what you would pay for it anyway after tax.

Gamestop manager told me that the reason there is a shortage of switch at laucnh is because they mass produced too many Wii u expecting a large demand at launch and it tanked. So they underproduced switch to keep from making too many and wasting money. Taken with tablespoon of salt.

Considering preliminary numbers show they made roughly twice as many switches as they did WiiUs for launch, I don't see how that could possibly be true.

Current state of affairs is they made a lot of switches and demand was still just higher.

Building hype for the holiday season. Nintendo has systems, just slowly releasing them to stores. Some stores I bet get more then others based on sales on previous video game sales.

Gamestop also told me the charging joycon controller was on backorder until May. I drove 5 minutes down the street to another one and they had like 10.

Nintendo rep for the Target I work at told me that for the ~3-4 months before switch launch all of their production capacity was just going to the switch, which is why NES classics and 3DS were in such low supply. It is only recently that they have begun building other consoles again.

First bug, Zelda is stuck open and I can't close it put the console to sleep or turn the console off. Holding the home button brings up to sleep menu but the controls are still active in Zelda and not in the Sleep menu the same thing happens when I hold the power off button and the touchscreen controls don't work either. LOL

Docked it. Went out for a bit. Came back and screen was frozen and no longer could I even open the home or sleep menu. Took the cartridge out and still nothing. Finally it hard powered off though after a few tries. Now it's back on and fine, lol. Thought I was going to have to let the batter drain.

Random as fuck, but this is something i've been discussing with rl friends and my fiance, i personally think steering away from disc media (blurays, not sure if they're still 50GB max) to flash media with no need to install the games, is the best move any manufacturer can make. Isn't it almost as cheap now to make 128GB solid state like cards, than blurays? Kinda seeing solid state media like mini cartridges or microSDs being the future now in gaming.

I've been thinking flash media as the future of gaming since the 3ds first came out for pretty much all the reasons you listed. Furthermore the sky is the limit and they will continue to become cheaper to produce.

During the age of the ds launch, and 3ds launch, we were looking at around $100+ for 64gb cards and not even nearly as fast as they are now. But i'm now glad nintendo stuck with it, and now it's the time where it's just cheaper as the days go by.
