The first part of that game was just leveling up; Controlling nodes was almost a waste of time if you weren't max level and the real meat of the game came from setting up fields of control. Basically, you could connect portals to other portals if no other territory was occupied by the opposite team and create a field that gave extra XP, damage and bonuses. It's kind of likely to see the GO teams do the same thing.
They were also pretty serious about hosting events in real-life: While there's not a lot to do right now, it's mostly preparing for the psuedo-raid content coming in the future. It's kinda shit when nothing else is happening, but some of the Ingress stuff was really quite neat so I'm hoping to see a redux of the Battle for DC or something. Mewtwo in Times Square could be an actual thing that happens, with pokemon teams running all over NYC to control locations to lure him out.
